Project 2 – Design of Plastic Parts

Durham College
School of Technology

May 20
The design of plastic parts (and diecast parts) is a somewhat specialized field. In
this field are many do’s and don’ts which have been learned over time. A good
designer needs to be aware of these “rules” and incorporate them into the design of
a part.

It is not unusual for manufacturers to change the method by which they

manufacture parts. Many things drive this change which can include the lowering
of cost, an increase in production volumes, conservation of material, and many
more.

The part shown below is an example of a part that is currently produced by

machining. As machining is a relatively expensive and somewhat slow process,
and the manufacturer has a greatly increased demand for it, a decision has been
made to injection mould the part instead.

The change to moulding means that the part must be re-designed to make it mould-
able. A drawing of the proposed new plastic part is given below. Your tasks are:

1. Draw, using Inventor, the new plastic part shown below.

2. Use metric units.
3. Create all the necessary views on a correctly sized sheet.
4. Add dimensions to the drawing.
5. Add an appropriate border to the drawing.
6. Create a PDF of the drawing.
7. Upload the part, drawing and PDF to a vault folder called project_2
8. Zip all files and submit to DC Connect for evaluation.
