Project Activity 1

Setting up the Traverse

Name Jose Manuel U. Subido Section EI2 Set Data Used Set E

• Objectives
o To set up a new 12d project
o To set up a projection for the Philippines
o To import given data in lat/long then convert it to coordinates
o To create the traverse (boundary)

• Screenshot of the Project:

o Setup Project Details
o Set Projection Window for the Philippines

o Read X Y Z General Files Window

o Plotted Points from Reading X Y Z General File

o Cartographic Window for Conversions

o Converted Points from UTM to Decimal Degrees

o Given Traverse Bounded by a String (Open)

o Given Traverse Bounded by a String (Closed)

• Learnings/Findings
o I learned how to maneuver through this activity using the guide in the pdf file given
to us. I also found out through this section of the project that it is easy to use 12d if
you are aware of what you must do. I also found out that this part of the project is
the most important part because the other activities would rely on what I have made
in this part.

• Conclusion
o To conclude, the surveyor used the 12d application to plot a traverse for the project.
In using this application, it is important to be patient and to follow the instructions
to get the results desired. The surveyor started with setting up the projection to
Philippines, and then a .txt file was imported through the X Y Z general file to insert
the points that serves as the traverse’s boundary. Thereafter, the surveyor was able
to convert it to Decimal Degrees using the Cartographic conversion. With the points
already known, the surveyor used the line string and close string option to create
the boundary of his traverse.

• Discuss about your impression of using the software in relation to this project activity.
o Using this software for the first time, I really thought it would be difficult to learn
how it would work. I’ve tried CAD before, but the controls here are way too
complicated if you compare it to CAD. In doing this activity, I tried it in advance,
only to find out that my laptop would not operate the said application due to low
specifications. Luckily, it was already in my mind prior to the ILW that I would be
upgrading my laptop given its lag issues. My inference was correct, it was the poor
specifications that led me to being unable to do the activity in advance. With an
upgraded laptop, a guide pdf file, and the application itself, it took me only 10
minutes to complete it compared to pre-upgrading where it took me 2 hours to press
the import button. Overall, it was fun, and it got me excited to continue to the next
activity as soon as I knew how it would be done.
