Vision Experiment 2:

Binocular Vision

/ What You’ll Need:

• Both of your eyes!

• A color printed or electronic version of the Binocular vision images

below (Image 1, Image 2, and Image 3).

0 What You’ll Do:

Refer to Binocular PDF

1. Look at image 1. Step back until you are about 2 or 3 arms lengths away from the screen (or if
you printed the images, from the piece of paper)

2. Practice gently crossing your eyes until you can see four circles instead of two. Stop and take a
break if your eyes start to feel tired.

3. Practice moving the two pairs of circles closer together or farther apart.

4. Try to get the two circles in the middle to line up on top of each other, like this:
5. Keep the two inner circles lined up until you feel your eyes relax and the middle circle
becomes focused.

6. Now do step 4 again with Image 2. For 30 seconds, try to keep your eyes on the same spot
and watch them closely. The color will change back and forth between purple and red! This
is because your brain is switching between focusing on information from your left eye and
information from your right eye.

7. Repeat the same procedure using the two circles that have the picture of Wild Orange
essential oil. What do you see? Look closely!

6 What You Discovered:

1. Did you have to focus in order to make the colors switch, or did your brain seem do that on its own?

2. Why might it be important for the brain to do certain processes automatically?

3. Give one example of something you might think you see that isn’t really what it looks like.

, What Does It Mean?

The eyes and the brain are amazing organs that work together to help us perceive the world
around us and understand what we are seeing. It is important to keep your eyes healthy. Make
sure to eat nutritious foods and also protect your eyes from harm by wearing sunglasses,
safety goggles, and eyeglasses if you have them.

3 What to Do Next:
• As you go about your normal daily routine, try to find all the different ways your eyes and your
brain work together automatically without you even having to think about it.
