Year Plan (Fall 2021)

French Second Language

Teacher: Aquinna Brokenshire

Contextual Information: Students begin French Second Language (FSL) classes in grade 4. I will be working with two grade 4/5
classes. At this point it is uncertain whether they are split classes, or full grade classes. My Teacher Mentor advised me that the
grade 5 students are by the vast majority still at the same level of the grade 4 students, so they will succeed best if they are working
at the grade 4 level, or somewhere between grade 4 and 5. For students who are succeeding above the level of grade 4 work,
modifications and differentiations will be made in their classroom content as well as in their assessments. Her suggestion was that
the grade 4 and 5 curriculum be combined to cater to all students. The grade 4 and 5 FSL program of studies are very similar, so a
combined approach of the two is not too difficult to achieve and should help set the students in each grade up for success in the
following grade.
I was also informed that since Senator Buchanan has such a high rate of immigrant students, they are still struggling with English, so
French might be too difficult for them to begin at the beginning of the year. My TM told me that for these students, they can be
encouraged to complete their work in English, as they will still be getting language experience if this is the case. This is going to be
decided on a student-by-student basis, and it is hard to know how many students these modifications will have to be made for until I
meet the students.

Over the course of the three units students will be continually filling out their personal language portfolios as well as their personal
dictionaries. This is so that they can track their learning and progress throughout the school year.
