WELL INTERVENTIONS COURSE HANDOUTS 1

WIRELINE

Objective:

Provide general knowledge of WL types & its operations, WL

equipments & its functional requirements, operational
parameters & well control requirements.
2
WIRELINE
Well Intervention technique of conveying tools & instrument downhole.
The most efficient & practical method to diagnose well problems.
Easily junk wells if not properly manage.

Wireline Category:
1. Slickline or Solid line or Piano line
2. Braided line
3. Electric line

3
SLICKLINE
Single strand wire with wire OD range from 0.105”, 0.108”, 0.125” , 0.140, 0.160”&
0.190”,0.260”
• Wire selection depends on the severity of the operation load.
• It’s robust & versatile in service

Mechanical application;
• Removal of well obstruction
• Repair mechanical failure
• Bringing other zones in-line
• Setting downhole FCD

Advance application by running;

• Recorded Real Time Data Acquisition Instrument
• Recorded Tubing Caliper
• Perforators
• Tubing Cutter
• Chemical Deployment Tools
• Explosive Jar etc
4
BRAIDEDLINE
Multi-strands wire cable OD range from 3⁄16”, 7⁄32”, ¼” & 5 ⁄16”.
• Wire selection depends on the severity of the operation load required.

Application:
• Retrieval of downhole tools with slickline failure.

• Fishing job

• Swabbing conventional type

Dyform type

5
ELECTRICLINE
Multi-strands wire cable range from 3⁄16”, 7⁄32”, ¼” & 5 ⁄16”, 7⁄16” & ¾” OD with
single or multiple conductors.

Application by running;
• SRO Pressure & Temperature Recorder
• SRO Electronic Logging Instrument for open hole & cased hole.

• Coring Services

• Packer setting

• Perforations etc.

11
PCE - QUICK UNION

•Thread Connection:
5¾ - 4 ACME Thread
•Hand Tight NO wrench
•O-Ring seal
•To be kept clean at all time.
•Check thread & o-ring before make-up.
12
Explosive decomposition

Gases in a producing well are capable of causing an additional

effect on the elastomer. When operating in an environment with
high free gas, the elastomer absorbs gas up to a saturation value.

If a decompression process occurs and the gas is liberated too

rapidly, then the elastomer suffers internal blistering, tearing or
cracking due to the abrupt gas expansion. This phenomenon is
commonly known as explosive decompression and occurs
frequently in environments with a high concentration of CO2.

13
Stuffing Box

The stuffing box is used to provide a seal around

the slickline as it moves into and out of the well.
A packing nut compresses, the packing within the
stuffing box to effect the seal. A sheave is used to
effect a 180deg bend and to guide the wire into
the stuffing box packing.

18
GREASE SEAL LEAKS DUE TO
• Pulling out or running in too fast
• Setting the grease injection pressure too low
• Increase in well head pressure , e.g after perforation
• Not enough grease in the tank supply
• Restriction in the grease supply system
• low grease pump air supply pressure
• Contaminated grease becomes thinner
• Incorrect flow tube ID or worn flow tubes
• Insufficient flow tubes length
• Grease type incompatible with conditions e.g. ambient
temperature or freezing due to gas escape

21
In-Situ pressure Test sub

The In-Situ Pressure Test Sub (sometimes

called Quick Test Sub) was originally designed
to reduce the time spent pressure testing a
lubricator rig up, prior to exposing it to live
well pressure. In situations where the
lubricator has to be tested each time the
bottom connection is broken, much time can
be lost.
