Definition of authority

 In a brief, authority is the right method of commanding or issuing orders and


instructions, and requiring subordinates to complete out assigned tasks in accordance
with the decision made.

Type of Authority

 Line personnel 
- The simplest organisational structure is the line personnel. It is a "performing"
organisation in the context that all organisational units are directly involved in the
production and marketing of the company's goods and services.
- Line personnel have power and authority over their subordinates and are
responsible for accomplishing goals.

 Staff personnel
- Staff personnel offer advice and conselling to line offers to help them perform
their duties effectively.
- Despite the fact that staff managers are not part of the chain of command for
direct product or service production, they do have power over workers. One
example of a staff manager is a legal adviser.
