(EL 101)

Name: Nestor Dela Cruz Project: Case Study Analysis

Course/Year/Sec. BSED-ENGLISH 1A Preliminary Period

Case Study:

Dylan is a grade 3 student at Cebu Normal University-Integrated

Laboratory School. He is performing very well in all subjects except in
Filipino and MTB (Mother Tongue-Based subject). He could not speak
in Cebuano even though he is living in Cebu with his Cebuano parents.
He speaks English all the time.

1.What could be the first language of Dylan?

2. What could be his mother tongue? Justify your answer.

3. Do you think Dylan could still be fluent in Cebuano?.

4. How could he do it?

Answers:

The first language that Dylan acquired from his parents is the "Mother
Tongue."

Based on my learnings, Mother Tongue is a language learned from birth.

Since the learning point sheet that was given by our beloved teacher
elucidates that the dominant language and home language are under the
Mother Tongue. Therefore, Dylan's Mother Tongue is the English
language because the dominant language that Dylan acquired from his
parents is English, and he obviously brought it outside of their home,
specifically at school.

Yes, Dylan could still be fluent in Cebuano.

One of the roles of a school is to build the capability of a student, in

speaking to be specific. Since, Dylan is already attending the school
wherein the native language which is the Cebuano, would be
emphasized deeply by his co-student, in teaching of the professor as
well. He could undoubtedly learn another language, and it would serve
as his L2 or famously known as Second Language.
