Strategies to use in classroom


1. Word wall:
a. Display of vocabulary words and their definitions. For example:
Divisor,reciprocal,ratio,rate,unit rate,equivalent ratio,ratio table,

b. Visual of graphic organizer explaining key vocabulary words, definitions, diagram
, and example.
c. Display of visual showing relationship between two or more quantities.
d. Showing word problem in diagram form

2. Explicitly explaining different words are used to describe rates. For example, $2 a
bushel, $ 7.50 for every sheet,and 6 inches per year. Realizing that prepositions are hard for
ELs. Remind students prepositions are often interchangeable.

3. Allowing extra time for reading a problem and solving a problem.

4. Having a teacher/student reading problem out loud. Reading word problems twice if needed.

5. Making a table that shows the equivalent of common percents. For example,

6. Make students familiarize with unknown concepts that may appear in word problems.
Concepts such as, tip,sales tax, and bonus.
7. Making a poster to display customary units and its abbreviation.
For example, inch abbreviated as in. Feet abbreviated as ft.
8. Allowing use of dictionary/ glossary
9. Allowing peer tutoring .

Culturally Relevant Teaching:

1. Ask students to share recipe of food from home.


For example , recipe from Indian family - Sooji Halwa

Sooji halwa recipe is often made in bulk on festive or religious occasions. If you want to make a
large quantity, then there is a certain proportion you have to follow.

The ratio of suji to sugar to water to ghee is 1:2:2:0.5 in a cup or glass measurement. Our family
slightly deviates from this proportion and add a bit less ghee and sugar for making it healthy.

Mexican salsa recipe may show proportion of tomato to onion to jalapeno pepper to garlic as
3:0.5:1:1

2. Interview students.Take each student aside for 2 min. Talk about their hobbies, favorite
part of learning and favorite activity from “Ratio and rate”lesson .
3. Allowing students to propose ideas for projects. Encourage collaboration to work on
group projects. Group of 3-4 students.
4. Allowing students to include words related to the topic from their home language onto
the word wall.
5. Integrating relevant word problems by including students’ names in word problems.
