1. Write sentences beginning with I wish…

1. I don’t know many people in the town.
I wish I knew many people in the town.
2. It would be nice to be able to fly a plane.
I wish I could fly a plan. (be able = can => can – could)
3. It’s a shame that I can’t stop smoking.
I wish I could stop smoking. (could + Vo)
4. Ann isn’t here and I need to see her.
I wish Ann was/were here. (có thể dùng were cho bất kỳ chủ từ nào
trong cấu trúc wish)
5. I don’t like being so short.
I wish I were taller.
6. Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow.
I wish I did not work tomorrow.

2. What do you say in these situation? Write sentences with I wish … would.
1. It’s raining. You want to go out, but not in the rain.
You say: I wish it would stop raining.
2. You’re waiting for Jane. She’s late and you’re getting impatient.
You say to yourself: I wish she would come here now.
3. You’re looking for a job – so far without success. Nobody will give you a
job.
You say: I wish somebody would give me a job. (Will/ would + Vo) (will
=> would)
 4. A baby has been crying for a long time and you’re trying to study.
You say: I wish the baby would stop crying. (stop + Ving: ngừng hẳn việc
đang làm)
5. Brian has been wearing the same clothes for years. You think he needs
some new clothes.
You say to him: I wish he would buy new clothes.

2. It’s a difficult question. I wish I knew the answer.
