CHAPTER 1 PRELIMINERY

1.1 GENERAL
Scour will occur on the bridge if the bridge structure affects the balance between the water and the
stability of the base material of the channel. If the bridge has one or more poles in the river flow, or if
the water level reaches one or both supports, the structure will affect the flow of the river. The first
effect is to reduce the width of the river at the bridge location. For certain streams in narrow streams,
this reduction in width will cause an increase in water level upstream of the bridge and accelerate the
flow in the openings. If accelerating flow causes the displacement or movement of the base material
of the channel, the bottom surface of the channel around the bridge will decrease.

In the construction of the Jakarta - Bandung High Speed Railroad, many bridges will be built across the
river, namely crossing the Citarum River. Bridges that cross a river can affect the flow in a river when
changing river morphology, if the bridge pillar or buffer affects the flow significantly. Therefore, it is
necessary to study the effect of pillar sections and / or bridge supports that affect the behavior of the
river flow, as well as the impact on the riverbed in the form of local scour, and increase in river water.

1.2 THE PURPOSE OF STUDY


The purpose of this study is to design hydraulics at the Jakarta-Bandung fast train intersection with
several locations in the Citarum River (DK 72+00, DK 73+500, DK 75+300, DK 115+800, DK 120+500,
DK 122+300, and DK 122+600). Whereas the purpose of this work is to obtain technical
recommendations from the Authority of the Citarum River Area (BBWS Citarum).

1.3 THE SCOPES


The scopes of the project are:

→ Collecting secondary data from Previous Study.


→ The hydrology study to estimate discharge of flood for many years’ periods.
→ Hydraulic study for pier/ structure effect at the river
→ Local scouring analyses for piers
→ To design for Bridge and river protection
If the implementation of work will require additional data / surveys and or analysis, the scope will be
added as needed
