WHAT IS A CYCLONE?

- Cyclone is a general term used by meteorologist to describe any rotating, organized cloud that originates over
waters.
- Cyclones, Hurricanes, Typhoons.
- One Event but different names depending on the location.
- Atlantic and Northeast Pacific - “Hurricane” .
- Northwest Pacific - “Typhoon”.
- South Pacific and Indian Ocean - A “Cyclone

WHAT ARE THE 3 STAGES OF CYCLONES?

- Cyclones generally occur in 3 stages :
- Tropical Cyclones, Cyclones and Super cyclones.
- Speed of less than 74 miles/hour - Tropical Cyclone.
- Speed between 75 to 120 miles/Hour - Cyclone or a Severe Cyclone.
- Speed more than 120 miles per hour - A Super Cyclone.

HOW CYCLONES ARE FORMED?

- Low atmospheric pressure and 26.5 degrees celsius
- ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
- The density of air from place to place differ
- The atmospheric pressure is the weight of air acting on the surface of the earth along with gravity
- The atmospheric pressure is more on the earth’s surface. As we move upwards there is less amount of air,
hence the low atmospheric pressure.
- When there is low atmospheric pressure on a large water body, on an odd surface, they turn into a “Cyclone.”
- The process of thin air circulating, strengthening, and developing into a cyclone formation is “Cyclogenesis”

TROPICAL CYCLONES
- Can grow up to a height of 10 km
- Lasts from 3-7 days
- Depending on the speed of the storm, how far it is from the land, and how big it is

Cyclones fade away or die when they close to a land area

The buildings do not act as the barrier stopping the storm to cross the land
When the cyclones cross the land, the main source of the cyclone which is the warm water is taken away.
Cyclones work with moist, warm air; therefore if it closes to a cold water surface or land surface; they die
