INTRODUCTION 2
SCC refer to concrete that can be compacted into every corner of formwork,
purely by its own weight and without the need of vibrating compaction.

SCC can also flow between reinforcement bar without tendency blockage of
coarse aggregate.

The fresh SCC requirements are mainly resumed to the filling ability, the
passing capacity and the resistance to segregation.

These properties are evaluated at the mix design stage, based on a series of
tests in fresh samples with distinct apparatus (EFNARC 2002).

The introduction of steel fibers in SCC mixes enhance the properties of SCC.

In this project work, fibers of hookend and crimped shape , both having length
50 mm & dia 1 mm and length 30 mm & dia 0.5 mm are to be investigated at
0.25%, 0.50% and 0.75% dosages.
Slump flow, J ring, V-funnel L-box and V funnel at T5 min :- Tests for fresh
properties of the SCC.
Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and
flexural strength of the concrete : - Tests for the hardened properties.
The optimum fiber content, shape of the fiber and aspect ratio are to be
determined for better performance in terms of strength.
PROPERTIES OF SCC 4

Resistance to segregation by using mineral fillers or fines and using special

admixtures.
It shall be flowable enough to pass through highly reinforced areas.
It must be able to avoid aggregate segregation.
Usually it have a slightly higher strength compared with traditional vibrated
concrete.
It must be placed at a relatively higher velocity than that of regular concrete.
It has been placed at heights taller than 5 meters without aggregate
segregation.
It can also be used in areas with normal and congested reinforcement, with
aggregates as large as 2 inches.
USES OF SCC 5

Bridges and even on pre-cast sections.

Drilled shafts
columns
Earth retaining systems
Areas with a high concentration of rebar and pipes/conduits
BENEFITS OF SCC 6

Improved constructability.
Labour reduction.
Bond to reinforcing steel.
Improved structural Integrity.
Accelerates project schedules.
Reduces skilled labour.
Flows into complex forms.
Reduces equipment wear.
Minimizes voids on highly reinforced areas.
Produces superior surface finishes.
Cntd… 7

Superior strength and durability.

Allows for easier pumping procedure.
Fast placement without vibration or mechanical consolidation.
Lowering noise levels produced by mechanical vibrators.
Produces a uniform surface.
Allows for innovative architectural features.
It is recommended for deep sections or long-span applications.
Produces a wider variety of placement techniques.
FACTORS AFFECTING SCC 8

Hot weather.
Long haul distances can reduce flowability of self-compacting concrete.
Delays on job site could affect the concrete mix design performance.
Job site water addition to Self-Compacting Concrete may not always yield the
expected increase in flowability and could cause stability problems.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SCC 9

SCC differs from conventional concrete in that its fresh properties are vital in
determining whether or not it can be placed satisfactorily.
The fresh properties that determines the workability of SCC are :
Filling ability
Passing ability
Segregation resistance

OBJECTIVES 10

The objective of this study is to optimize the Steel Fiber Reinforced Self
Compacting Concrete (SFRSCC) in the fresh and in hardened state
Project aims to study the incorporation of steel fibers at varying
concentrations in self compacting concrete.
To determine the effect of aspect ratio and shape of steel fibers on fresh and
hardened properties of self compacting concrete.
A comparison is intended to make on the properties of SCC with the addition
of steel fibers by determining its compressive strength, flexural strength ,
split tensile strength and modulus of elasticity.
To know it’s application in construction industry.
METHODOLOGY 11

PREPARATION OF SCC
SCC of the desired mix proportion is to be prepared.
The materials used for preparing SCC include:
Ordinary Portland Cement of 43 grade
Fine aggregate
Coarse aggregate
Chemical admixture - Cera Hyperblast XRW40
Additions - Silica fume
Water.
