What Is Your Chosen Religious Ritual About?: "Periodic Ritual" (Sunday Mass)
A periodic ritual is one that is done at regular intervals, e.g., daily, weekly, monthly, annually, etc. The
aim of a periodic ritual is to mark time, to create or maintain a connection between the performers and
their cultures or communities, as well as to stimulate active and regular participation of members of a
tradition in its beliefs and practices. Periodic Rituals assist in enhancing bonds amongst members of a
religious community and their belief system. These rituals can either be communal or individual and can
be executed by the beneficiary or by an officiant. Examples of Periodic Rituals include daily meditation,
prayers done before meals, Sunday mass, or full moon services.
The celebration of Mass, like life, has vertical and horizontal dimensions. This parallels the great
commandment, which instructs us to love God and then to love our neighbors as ourselves. The
way we celebrate Sunday will affect the way we live the remainder of the week and is a mark of
Christian identity from generation to generation.
