Worksheet 2 in Meteorology

(Clouds, Relative Humidity and Temperature)

Name: Wiljoyce Kate A. Sanchez Date: November 2, 2021

Program/Year: BSED- Science 3

I. Write true if the statement is true or false if the statement is false.

False 1. When air temperature falls, the air can hold more water vapor.
True 2. Cloudy days tend to have a greater range of temperatures than clear
days.
True 3. Water vapor condenses when air temperature reaches the dew point.
True 4. A cloud consists of billions of individual water droplets.
True 5. Dust or other particles are needed for clouds to form.
True 6. Only high clouds consist of ice crystals.
True 7. Stratocumulus clouds rarely bring precipitation.
True 8. Advection fog forms when warm humid air travels up a hillside and
cools.
True 9. All precipitation falls from clouds.
True10. Hail forms in cumulonimbus clouds with strong updrafts.

II. Critical Reading. Read this passage based on the text and answer the
questions that follow.
Questions
1. How do clouds influence weather?
Answer: Clouds have such an influence on weather because they cool the Earth's
surface during the day and warm it at night. It blocks sun radiation from reaching the
earth and absorbs heat that is re-emitted. Finally, clouds are necessary for precipitation
to occur.
2. Explain how clouds form.
Answer: Warm air can hold more water vapor than cool air, therefore when air cools, it
can no longer hold as much water vapor as it could when it was warm. This extra water
vapor condenses out of the air into liquid water droplets. Water vapor requires a particle
to condense on, such as dust or pollen. Condensation nuclei are the name for these
particles. Enough water vapor will condense on condensation nuclei to form a cloud at a
certain period.
3. Outline how clouds are classified by altitude.
Answer:
 High Clouds- form at high altitudes and consist of ice crystals.
 Middle Clouds- form at middle altitudes and consist of ice crystals, water
droplets, or both.
 Low clouds- form at low altitudes and consist entirely or mainly of water
droplets.
 Vertical clouds- grow upward and have their bases at low altitude and their
tops at middle or high altitude. They form when strong air currents carry warm
air upward.

III. Matching. Match each definition with the correct term.

b. humidity 1. amount of water vapor in the air in a particular place
d. relative humidity 2. percentage of water vapor in a given volume of air relative to
the maximum amount the air can hold
e. altostratus cloud 3. type of middle-altitude cloud
a. dew point 4. temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor
f. stratus cloud 5. type of low-altitude cloud
g. cumulus cloud 6. type of cloud that grows vertically
c. cirrostratus cloud 7. type of high-altitude cloud

IV. Fill in the Blank. Fill in the blank with the appropriate term.
1. Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.
2. Weather depends on the amount and location of solar energy in the atmosphere.
3. The average weather of a region over a long period of time is the region’s
climate.
4. Basic cloud types are defined on the basis of their altitude.
5. A cloud located at ground level is called fog.
6. Dew is a type of precipitation that forms when moist air cools on contact with a
cold surface.
7. Frost is dew that forms when the air temperature is below freezing.

V. Identify each statement as relating to dew point (DP) or relative humidity

(RH).
DP 1. Measured as a temperature
RH 2. How much water vapor in the air compared to what the air can hold
RH 3.written as a percentage
DP 4.temperature of the air at which water vapor will condense
RH 5.at 100% when air is full of the water vapor it can hold
RH 6. Changes when the air temperature changes
DP 7. Always lower in the desert
RH 8. Increase when temperature decreases
DP 9. Can never be higher than the air temperature
RH 10. Can be the same from day to day even if the amount of water vapor changes

VI. Visualizing DP and RH

Questions:
1. Which container represents the warmest air?
Answer: Container 3 represents the warmest air.
2. If the temperature of the containers (air samples) were to decrease, what would
happen to their sizes?
Answer: If the temperature of the container were to decrease the sizes also decreases.
3. Which container represents air with the highest dew point?
Answer: The container that represents air with the highest dew point is container 3.
4. What is the relative humidity of each “air” sample?
Answer: Each air sample contains 50% relative humidity.
5. If more water was added to the “air samples”, which would become saturated
first?
Answer: If more water is added to the air samples, container 1 will most likely to
become saturated first.
6. When air becomes saturated with water vapor, what could happen?
Answer: When air becomes saturated with water vapor, then, the water vapor will
condense.
