Conditionals
Sentences with if are used to express possibilities: Third conditional
if clause past perfect;
First conditional main clause conditional perfect tense
if clause present tense; used to talk about the possible consequence
main clause future tense of an action that did not happen:
▶ If I had written my essay this afternoon,
used to talk about the consequence of a
possible action: I would have had time to go out tonight.
▶ If I write my essay this afternoon, I will have ( it is now evening, and I haven’t written my
time to go out tonight. ( it is still morning, essay: it is now impossible for me to go out. )
and it is quite possible that I will do this. )
Zero conditional
Second conditional Sometimes sentences with if express certainty
if clause past simple; rather than possibility. The zero conditional
main clause conditional tense is used to talk about something that is always
true, or that was always true in the past:
used to talk about the consequences of a ▶ If you mix blue and red, you get purple.
hypothetical action: ( present simple in both parts of the sentence )
▶ If I wrote my essay this afternoon, ▶ If I asked her to come with us, she always said
I would have time to go out tonight. no. ( past simple in both parts of the sentence)
( it is still morning, but I think it is less likely
that I will do this. )
