Communicative Styles (Intimate vs. Casual)

Background Information for Learners

Intimate and casual style can be quite confusing for some since they both do not require a very
formal way of communicating and using slang is acceptable for both style of communication.
Remember that intimate style takes place if the relationship of those involved in
communication is very close like best friends, lovers or family members. This means that words and
private vocabulary and even small gestures can be understood by both communicators because of their
close relationship.
Casual style however, involves friends, acquaintances and or the people we transact with in our
daily lives. This type of relationship lets us be comfortable enough to use slangs and colloquial but is
not close enough to use private vocabulary like intimate style.
