Job Requirements
I. Summary of the Position
Waiters and waitresses work at restaurants and other food facilities, interacting with customers
and delivering their meals on time. They collaborate with other waiters/waitresses and restaurant
personnel to collect orders, make menu recommendations, and keep an eye on customers
throughout the meal. Their role is to record orders on a notebook or tablet device and communicate
them to the kitchen. They may also be in charge of wiping tables after customers have left and
interacting with the kitchen regarding orders from diners.

I. Education and Training
Although some businesses may demand a high school diploma or equivalent, most
employers do not specify education and training requirements for Waiters/Waitresses. Some
websites and states provide Safe Food Handling certification; which service industry workers can
take to make themselves more appealing candidates in a competitive market. Waiters/waitresses
can advance to leadership or managerial positions as they get more expertise in the field.
II. Experience Requirements
Starting as a host or hostess and working your way up to server is a common career path
for a Waiter/Waitress with no experience. There are no specific experience requirements for
becoming a Waiter/Waitress beyond that. Customers service, attention to detail, multitasking, and
basic numeracy are all talents that anyone entering the service industry should hone. This type of
experience and skill set is typically acquired after working in the food service sector for a period
of time.
