WEEK 6

PAST PERFECT. AFFIRMATIVE PRACTICE

1. Functions of the past perfect
The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now. It is used to make it clear that
one event happened before another in the past. It does not matter which event is
mentioned first - the tense makes it clear which one happened first.
simple)

In these examples, Event A is the event that happened first and Event B is the second or
more recent event:

Event A (Sucedió primero) Event B (Es má s reciente)

Este va siempre en pasado perfecto.

John had gone out when I arrived in the office.

Event A Event B

I had saved my document before the computer crashed.

Event B Event A

When they arrived we had already started cooking.

Event B Event A

He was very tired because he hadn't slept well.

2. Forming the past perfect
The Past Perfect tense in English is composed of two parts: the past tense of the verb to
have (had) + the past participle of the main verb.

Subject+ had+ past participle (Sujeto+había+pasado participio)

A. Affirmative

She had given

Ella había dado

B. Negative

She hadn't asked.

Ella no había preguntado.

C. Interrogative

Had they arrived?

Habían ellos llegado?

D. Interrogative Negative

Hadn't you finished?

¿No habías tú terminado?

To decide, past perfect (El verbo decidir en pasado perfecto)

Affirmative Negative Interrogative

You had decided You hadn't decided Had you decided?

She had decided She hadn't decided Had she decided?

We had decided We hadn't decided Had we decided?

3. Past perfect + just

'Just' is used with the past perfect to refer to an event that was only a short time earlier
than before now, e.g.
 The train had just left when I arrived at the station.

 She had just left the room when the police arrived.

 I had just put the washing out when it started to rain.

Week 7 PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS AFFIRMATIVE
PART 1
The past perfect continuous (also called past perfect progressive) is a verb tense which is used to show that an action
started in the past and continued up to another point in the past.

Past Perfect Continuous Forms

The past perfect continuous is formed using had + been + present participle.

Statement: Peter had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally arrived.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS USES

USE 1 : Duration Before Something in the Past

We use the past perfect continuous to show that something started

in the past and continued up until another time in the past. "For five minutes" and "for two weeks" are both
durations which can be used with the past perfect continuous. Notice that this is related to the present perfect
continuous; however, the duration does not continue until now, it stops before something else in the past.

 They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.

 She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.
 How long had you been waiting to get on the bus?

 Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work.

 James had been teaching at the university for more than a year
before he left for Asia.

USE 2 Cause of Something in the Past (Causa de algo en el pasado)

Using the past perfect continuous before another action in the past is a good way to show cause and effect.

Examples:

Jason was tired because he had been running.

Jason estaba cansado porque él había estado corriendo

Sam gained weight because he had been overeating.

Betty failed the final test because she had not been attending class.
