0 INTRODUCTION
Open Source Software(OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the
source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a
software license that permits user to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the
software.Hardware is objects that can actually touch like disks, disk drives, display
screen,keyboards,printers,boards and chips.Software is untouchable.It exists as ideas,concepts and
symbols but it has no substance.

2.0 THE LATEST OF OPEN SOURCE AND OPERATING SYSTEM

Meaning of operating system and the examples
An operating system(OS) is software consisting of programs and data that runs of
computers, manage computer hardware resources and provides common services for execution of
various application software.Examples of open source operating system is linux and Windows XP.Linux is
refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating system using the Linux kernel.Linux can be installed
on a wide variety of compuer hardware ranging from mobile phones ,tablet computers and video game
consoles to mainframe and supercomputers.Linux also is a leading server operating system and runs the
10 fastest supercomputers in the world. Some example of linux is Redhat.Redhat is a leading software
company in the business of assembling open source components for the Linux operating system and
related programs into a distribution package that can easily be ordered.OpenSUSE is one of the most
popular, oldest and mature Linux Distributions to date.KDE is an international free software community
producing an integrated set cross-platform applications designed to run on Linux
,FreeBSD,Solaris,Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX systems.Kubuntu is an official derivative of the
Ubuntu operating system using the KDE Plasma Dekstop instead of the GNOME graphical
environment.Ubuntu is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people’s allegiances and relations
with each other.Windows XP is the operating system installed on Microsoft-enabled personal
computers from 2001 until 2008.Windows XP was available in both 32-bit and 64-bit systems and is still
used in many homes and office computers.
3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Meaning of application software and the examples
Application software is computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple
related specific tasks.Examples of open source application software is Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft
Powerpoint.Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from Mozilla Application
Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. To display web pages,Firefox uses the Gecko layout
engine.Microsoft Powerpoint is Microsoft Office product that provide users with an interface to design
multimedia slides to be displayed on a projection system or personal computers. The software
incorporates images, sounds, videos, text and charts to create an interactive presentation.Microsoft
Powerpoint interacts with other Office products such as Microsoft Word and Excel and is included with
most Microsoft Office packages.

4.0 THE LATEST OF DEVELOPMENT IN ICT

Hardware
The one example of hardware is laptop.Laptop has many special features. It is available in many sizes
and shapes. The buyers can go for a cheap products if it is intended only for basic usage like word
processing or emails. There are expensive products with innovative features.Size and weight are
important for this portable device.Screen size vary between 12 inchies to 17 inchies.Widescreen use for
movies are also available. The weight of the laptop with larger screens will be more, much to the
disadvantage of the users who want to carry as a personal baggage. Many of the laptop batteries will
have minimum 3.5 hours of durability. It also has other features like keyboards, hard drives,USB ports and
network capability which are very vital.Built-in Ethernet capability,built-in wireless connection and built-
in blue tooth are also other features. It also is a fast forward mode. The first personal computer became
feasible in the early of 1970s,and the first commercially available portable computer appeared in
September 1975.The first laptops using the filp form factors appeared in the early 1980s.Display reached
VGA resolution by 1988 and colour screens started becoming a common upgrade in 1991 with increases
in resolution and screen size occurring frequently until the introduction of 17-screen laptops in 2003.On
March 2011,Lenovo has built the world’s first eye controlled laptop with using eye tracking technology
from Tobii. In 2006,7 major ODMs manufactured 7 of every 10 laptops in the world.
Software
The one example of software is Windows XP.The special features of Windows XP are have GDI±
graphics subsystem and image management .It also has start menu and taskbar. It have a number of new
features in Windows Explorer and a number of kernel enhancements and power managements
improvements. It is faster start-up ,log on,log off, hibernation and application launch sequences. It has an
ability to discard a newer device driver. It has ClearType font rendering mechanism, which is designed to
improve text readability on LCD and similar monitors. It also has Remote Assitance and Remote Desktop
features, which allow users to connect to a computer running Windows Xp from across the network and
the Internet and access their applications, files, printers and devices or request help.It has handwriting
recognition, speech recognition and digital ink support accessible through the Tablet PC Input Panel in
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.Windows XP also has numerous improvements to system administration
tools and Group Policy. It was first released to computer manufacturers on August 24,2001.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

Meaning of pervasive computing and the examples
Pervasive computing is the growing trend towards embedding microprocessors in everyday objects so
they can communicate information. The word pervasive mean “existing everywhere”.The examples of
pervasive computing is Wearable Computers and Smart Home.Wearable Computers are computers that
are worn on the body. They have been applied to areas such as behavioral modeling, health monitoring
system, information technologies and media development. It are especially useful for applications that
require computational support while the user’s hand, voice, eyes or attention are actively engaged with
the physical environment. An example of Wearable Computer is Zypad WR1100 which a rugged wrist
wearable wireless computer running Linux OS.It has a special fiberglass reinforced nylon/magnesium
alloy case to maximize durability.Smart Home is equipped with structured writing to enable occupants
to removely control or program an array of automated home electronic device. An example of Smart
Home is Sanyo CCTV,VCB 3454 which has 1/3 ccd image sensor with approx 270,000 picture
elements, horizontal resolution of 400 tv lines,S/N ratio of more than 50 dB and backlight
compensatition.
6.0 CONCLUSION
Today, the world change and the technology more successful.
