THE USE OF ARPA/RADAR OPERATION IN ECDIS AND RADAR OVERLAY

FUNCTION
ARPA
Automatic radar plotting aids are essentially utilized to improve the standard of collision
avoidance at sea. Primarily designed as anti-collision radar.
The system is able to acquire automatically and constantly monitor number of targets, plot
their speeds and courses, present these as vectors on the display screen, updated with each
sweep of the antenna, and calculate their closest points of approach to own ship and the time
before that will occur.

RADAR
Electronic navigation aid using radio waves sent out as a narrow beam to detect solid objects
around the ship.
X-band (10 GHz) - higher frequency is used for a sharper image and better resolution
S-band (3GHz the S-band is used especially when in rain or fog as well as for identification and
tracking.

RADAR OVERLAY
(A raw radar image overlaid on an electronic chart) is the best means of verifying cartographic
data and the output of navigation sensors.
Confirmation of precise positioning relative to the chart, clearly reveals any inconsistencies, A
dramatic improvement in accuracy and clarity and therefore in safety.
