SCHOOLS DIVISION OF PASAY CITY
MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 4
First Quarter/ Week 5/ Day 1

OBJECTIVE: Solves multi-step routine problems involving multiplication, addition and

subtraction using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
Hi! I am Teacher Devie. Are you ready for today’s lesson? I know you
are excited to try your skills on problem solving. For this module we are
going to discover ways on how to solve word problem that involves
multiplication, addition and subtraction. Hope you will enjoy answering
the exercises.
Have fun!

Mrs. Capinpin have 18 trays with 30 eggs on each tray. She sold
210 eggs in the morning and another 3 trays in the afternoon. How many
eggs were unsold?

Let’s visualize the problem. Look and study the illustration below:

18 trays with 30 eggs on each tray

18 trays x 30 eggs = 210 eggs sold in the morning 3 trays with 30 eggs per tray
540 eggs sold in the afternoon

How many eggs does Mrs. Capinpin have at first?

Mrs.Capinpin has18 trays with 30 eggs in each tray. So,18trays
x 30 eggs is equal to 540 of eggs.
How many tray of eggs did Mrs. Capinpin sell in the morning?
She sold 210 of eggs in the morning.
Look at the illustration above, how many pieces of eggs are there in
7 trays?T here are 210 eggs in 7 trays ( 7 x 30)
How many trays of eggs did Mrs. Capinpin sell in the afternoon?
She sold 3 trays in the afternoon.
How many eggs are there in 3 trays?
3 x 30 = 90, there are 90 eggs in 3 trays
Drawing or illustrating a picture is one of the best ways to solve problems. We can
easily understand the problem by visualizing it. However, you should also learn solving
word problems though mathematical operations.

We use these guide questions in answering word problems:

o What is asked? The number of eggs unsold.
o What are given?18 trays with 30 eggs in each tray, 210 eggs in the morning,
3 trays in the afternoo
o What is the hidden question? Total number of eggs in 3 trays
o What operations are to be used? Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction
o What is the number sentence? [540 – [210 + ( 3 x 30 )] = n

Let us solve the problem:

540 – [210 + (3 x 30)] = n
540 - (210 + 90) =n
540 – 300 = 240
So, we can say that Mrs. Capinpin has 240 unsold eggs

Do we have the same answer?

Let us try another one.

At Pasay Wet Market, Aling Emi bought 3 kilos of milk fish at PhP165.00
per kilo and 2 kilos of tilapia for PhP145 per kilo. How much will be Aling Emi’s
change from her PhP1, 000 bill?

What is asked? The amount of change from Aling Emi’s PhP1000.

What are the given facts? PhP1000, 3 kilos of milk fish at PhP165 per kilo,
2 kilos of tilapia at PhP145 per kilo
What are the operations to be use? Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction
What are the clue words? and = indicates addition as the operation
at = individual amount, multiplication
change = subtraction, amount left
What is the mathematical sentence?
PhP1000 – [(3 x PhP165) + (2 x PhP145)] = n
o Solution:
PhP1000 – [(3 x PhP165 ) + ( 2 x PhP145 )]= n
PhP1000 – ( PhP495 + PhP290 )= n
(total amount of milk fish) (total amount of tilapia)
PhP1000 - PhP785 = PhP215.00

Aling Emi bought PhP785 worth of fish and received a change of PhP215 from her
PhP1000.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?

multiplication and subtraction using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

Hi! I am Teacher Devie. Are you ready for today’s lesson? For this module we
are going to discover methods on how to solve non-routine word problem.
A non-routine problem is any complex problem that requires some degree of
creativity or originality to solve. Non-routine problems typically do not have an
immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Often times,
these problems can be solved in multiple ways.
Possible strategies include the following:
1. Act it out/use materials. 2. Draw a picture/diagram. 3. Look for a
pattern. 4. Use logical reasoning. 5. Guess and check. 6. Make an
organized list. 7. Make a table. 8. Work backwards. 9. Use an equation.
10. Use simpler numbers.
.
TRY TO DISCOVER:
Mang Norman harvested 859 heads of cabbage from each of the 15 plots of his farm,
while Mang Ramon harvested 940 heads of cabbage from each of the 12 plots of his
farm. Who harvested more cabbage?

OBJECTIVE: Divides 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers without and with

remainder.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 Division is the opposite of multiplication.
 It is repeated subtraction. We subtract the same number as many times as
needed.
 The number we divide is called dividend.
 The number by which we divide is the divisor.
 The answer in division is called quotient.
 The number left after dividing is the remainder. It is always less than the
divisor.

Answer: There were 205 barangays served.

Let’s try another example:

Within a period of five years, 4 224 hectares of forestland areas were reforested
by 75 volunteer agencies. If the volunteer agencies reforested equal number of
hectares, how many hectares were reforested by each volunteer agency? How many
hectares were reforested?

You can solve this by using this solution.

Solution: 56r.24
75/ 4 224
Step 1-375 (5 x 75 = 375)
474
 Divide: 422 ÷ 75 = 5-450 (6 x 75 = 450)
 Multiply: 5 x 75 = 375 24
 Subtract: 422 – 375 = 47 remainder

Step 2 Answer:
 Bring down the ones digit of the dividend: 4 Each volunteer agency
 Divide: 474 ÷ 75 =6 reforested 56 hectares.
 Multiply: 6 x 75 = 450 There were 4 200 hectares
reforested and 24 hectares
 Subtract: 474 – 450 = 24 ( remainder)
unforested.

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 4
First Quarter/ Week 5/ Day 5

OBJECTIVE: Divides 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1 to 2 digit numbers without and with

remainder.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

Division is the process of finding how many times one number or quantity is contained
in another. Division can be done as repeated subtraction.

TRY TO DISCOVER!
Bryan celebrated his 9th birthday. He invited his 144 schoolmates. If he was able
to print 9 invitation cards per hour, how many hours did he spend printing the invitation
cards?
 Who celebrated his 9th birthday? ( Bryan)
 How many schoolmates he invited? ( 144 schoolmates)

Looking at the problem, what does it ask for?

How will you solve for the answer?
Here’s how!

Step 1
 Divide the first partial dividend (14 tens) by the divisor. 14 ÷ 9 = 1
 Write the quotient 1 above the tens place.
 Multiply the quotient 1 by the divisor. 1 x 9 = 9
 Write the product 9 under the 14 tens.
 Subtract 9 from 14. 14 – 9 = 5
 Write 5 under the tens place

Step 2
 Bring down the ones digit.
 Divide the new dividend by the divisor. 54 ÷ 9 = 6

 Write the quotient 6 above the ones place.
 Multiply the quotient by the divisor. 6 x 9 = 54
 Write the product 54 under the 54 tens.
 Subtract 54 from 54. 54 – 54 = 0

Step 3
 Multiply the quotient by the divisor
 The product must be equal to the dividend.

Let’s try another example:

Mira ordered 7 621 roses for her flower shop. Her helpers made bouquets for every
18 roses. How many bouquet of roses were made for sale?

Find 7 621 ÷ 18 = N.

This is how you can do it.

1. Divide. 76 ÷ 18 = 4.
Steps:
2. Multiply. 4 x 18 = 72.
3. Subtract 76 – 72 = 4.
18 4. Bring down 2. Divide 42 by 18 = 2.
5. Multiply. 2 x 18 = 36.
6. Subtract 42- 36 = 6.
7. Bring down 1. Divide 61 by 18 = 3.
8. Multiply 3 x 18 = 54.
9. Subtract 61- 54 = 7
10. Express 7 as remainder.

Answer : 7 621 ÷ 18 = 423 r. 7
