B. Tech, Mechanical Engineering

End Semester Examination
Branch: Mechanical Engineering Semester: 3rd
Course Name: Kinematics of Machines Course Code: ME-211
Time Allowed: 2 Hours Maximum Marks: 50

NOTE: Attempt all the questions carrying marks as indicated

1. Explain the construction and working of crank and slotted lever mechanism with a neat sketch. (5)

2. With a neat schematic diagram explain the terms: Herringbone Gear, Involute Profile, Prime Circle,
Pressure Angle of Gear, Offset follower. (5)

3. Differentiate between: (a) Simple gear train and compound gear train (b) Reverted gear train and epicyclic
gear train. (6)

4. The crank of a slider crank mechanism is 15cm and the connecting rod is 60cm long. The crank makes
300rpm in clockwise direction. When it has turned 450 from the inner dead center position, draw the velocity
diagram and determine: Velocity of slider, Angular velocity of connecting rod and Linear velocity of the
mid point of connecting rod. . (10)

5. An open belt running over two pulleys 24cm and 60cm diameters connects two parallel shafts 3m apart and
transmits 3.75 kW from the smaller pulley that rotates at 300 rpm. Coefficient of friction between belt and
pulleys is 0.3 and the safe working tension is 100 N/cm width. Determine: minimum width of belt, initial belt
tension and length of belt required. (10)

6. Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife edge follower (axis of follower passes through axis of cam shaft)
from the following data:
i) Follower to move outward through 30mm with S.H.M during 1200 of cam rotation.
ii) Follower to dwell for next 600.
iii) Follower to return to its original position with uniform velocity during 900 of cam rotation.
iv) Follower to dwell for the rest of cam rotation.
The least radius of cam is 20mm and the cam rotates at 240rpm. Also determine the maximum velocity of
follower during return stroke. (14)
