Irrigation works design (2) Head Regulator

General Data for Project 1


Figure (1) shows the D.S cross section of a main canal in which a
reinforced concrete regulator is to be constructed. The regulator
consists of 4 vents each 3.0 m width. The maximum discharge through
the regulator is Q = 50 m3/sec and the maximum heading up is 10 cm.
The following data are also considered in the design:
i. The bridge width = 10.0 m and it has 2 sidewalks of 1.0 m each.
ii. The pier width =1.0 m, Vertical sliding steel gates with four Main
girders are used.
iii. The equivalent Dead and Live loads of the bridge are 1.00 and
3.00 t/m2, respectively.
iv. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 30o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.15 kg/cm2.
v. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
a) Check the value of heading up for fully open gates.
b) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.

General Data for Project 2


A reinforced concrete head regulator with approach channel is to be
constructed to feed a main canal from a Rayah. The cross section for
the canal is shown in figure (1). The available data for the regulator
are:
i. The equivalent D.L of the bridge and sidewalks =1.0 t/m2.
ii. The equivalent L.L on the bridge is assumed uniformly distributed
and equal 1.5 t/m2 while for the sidewalks is considered of 0.5
t/m2.
iii. The bridge width over the regulator is 10.0 m and has two
sidewalks of 1.25 m width for each.

iv. Width of the piers and abutments = 0.8 m


v. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 35o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.20 kg/cm2.
vi. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
a) Give a complete hydraulic design of the regulator.
b) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.

General Data for Project 3


A reinforced concrete head regulator with 200.0 m approach channel
is to be constructed to feed a main canal from a Rayah. The cross
sections data for the canal and Rayah at the crossing site are given in
the following table. The available data for the regulator are:
i. Maximum allowable discharge through the canal is 6.8*106
m3/day.
ii. The span of vents is 5.0 m, the bridge width over the regulator is
10.0 m and it has two sidewalks of 1.0 m width for each,
iii. The width of the intermediate piers is 1.0 m, Vertical sliding
steel gates with three Main girders are used.
iv. The equivalent Dead and Live loads of the bridge are 1.25 and
2.50 t/m2, respectively.
v. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 30o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.15
kg/cm2. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
a) Carry out the hydraulic design of the regulator
b) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.

General Data for Project 4


A reinforced concrete head regulator is to be constructed to feed a
branch canal from a main canal. The cross sections data for the branch
canal is given in the following table. The available data for the
regulator are:
i. Maximum allowable discharge through the canal is 65 m3/s.
ii. The bridge width over the regulator is 10.0 m and it has two
sidewalks of 1.0 m width for each,
iii. The width of the intermediate piers is 1.25 m, Vertical sliding
steel gates with four Main girders are used.
iv. The equivalent Dead and Live loads of the bridge are 1.00 and
2.50 t/m2, respectively.
v. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 30o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.11 kg/cm2.
(For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
c) Carry out the hydraulic design of the regulator
d) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.

girders are used.
iii. The equivalent Dead and Live loads of the bridge are 1.20 and
2.30 t/m2, respectively.
iv. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 35o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.20 kg/cm2.
v. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
c) Carry out the hydraulic design of the regulator
d) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.

It is required to give a complete design of the regulator according to
the following data:
- Canal discharge Q = 24 m3 / sec
- Canal bed level : 100.00
- Bed width : 10 m
- Road level : 104.50
- Max water level : 103.50
- Side slope : 3 : 2
- Road Width : 12 m
- Soil type :- medium clay (Soil strength = 1.5 kg / cm2)
- The pier width =1.0 m, Vertical sliding steel gates with four Main
girders are used.
- The equivalent Dead and Live loads of the bridge are 1.50 and
2.50 t/m2, respectively.
- The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 35o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 %. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

2.00 t/m2, respectively.
iv. The soil properties at the regulator site are: Φ = 35o, γbulk = 1.80
t/m3, void ratio 40 % and the soil bearing capacity = 1.00 kg/cm2.
v. (For the used R.C, K1 = 0.31, K2 = 1218).

It is required to:
e) Carry out the hydraulic design of the regulator
f) Give a complete structure design of the regulator.
