Irrigation Works Design (2) Solved Problems

1-HYDRAULIC DESIGN FOR APRONS OF

CONTROL STRUCTURES

Problem 1-1
For the shown weir, you are given:

- Bligh's coefficient (C) = 10 and γf = 2.2 t/m3.

- The discharge per unit length of weir = 2.50 m3/sec/m

a) Find the dimensions a, b, c and the depth of sheet pile (d)

for the safety against undermining.
b) Draw to a suitable scale the full cross section of the weir.
c) Compute the actual piezometric head & pressure head
diagram, and hence check the thickness of apron at point e.
d) Calculate the ground water level at point e (behind the
abutments).

Dr. Amir M. Mobasher 133

Irrigation Works Design (2) Solved Problems

Problem 3-4
The given figure shows a regulator pier, if you have the following
data:

- The regulator has 4 vents each 3 meter in width.

- The level of the pier top is (8.00) m, and width of the pier is
1.25 m.
- The upstream water level is (7.49) m, and the floor is
horizontal at level (3.80) m.
- The reactions from adjacent spans including the dead and
live loads that are transmitted from the bridge to piers
through points (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) were calculated as
follows:
- RD.L. reaction/girder of bridge = 6 ton.
- RL.L. reaction/girder of bridge = 5 ton.

It is required to check the maximum and minimum stresses on the

base section of the pier from the different possible cases of
loading.

Solution

Earth Dams
Problem 5-5
The figure shows an earth-fill dam with a toe filter founded on an
impervious foundation layer. For the given case, it is required to:

a) Draw flow net under the earth dam and then calculate the
seepage discharge per unit length of the dam (K = 10-4 m/s).
b) Sketch out the phreatic surface (seepage line) of the seepage
flow and use it to calculate the seepage discharge per unit
length of the dam.

Dr. Amir M. Mobasher 211

Irrigation Works Design (2) Solved Problems

Solution

From flow net:

H = 4.00 m Nf = 3.00 Nd = 15.00

q= K .H. Nf/Nd = 10-4 × 4 × 3/15 = 8×10-5 m3/s/m

From drawing:

S = 0.80 m

q= K . S = 10-4 × 0.8 = 8×10-5 m3/s/m
