Uncertain tonality throughout C major but with lots of chromatic notes
Pedal note used in opening section in the strings clusters used in some sections

Imitation builds throughout the opening Homophonic sections

Rhythm and Metre


Begins in free tempo changes of metre throughout (4/4, 3/4, 2/4 )
Lots of rubato never a steady pulse throughout the piece
Lots of quintuplets and sextuplets because of the slow tempo
Lots of semiquavers because of the slow tempo

Timbre and Dynamics


Starts very quietly
Use of lots of different instruments to imitate the melody in the beginning
Wide range of dynamics used (pianissimo – forte)
Whole orchestra used for melodic ideas and accompanying the solo trumpet
