FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
This formative assessment is to be used during your learning for the unit ICTDBS502 -
Design a database.

Formative assessments are designed for learning. Rather than assessing the learning
itself, it is used to assist your learning.

They are designed as a practice for you similar to homework. They assist you to learn.

Formative assessments can be done either as an:

 Individual

 In a group

 With a partner

 With the whole class

There are a few different methods of formative assessment. These include:

 Summaries and Reflections - Learners stop and reflect, make sense of what
they have heard or read, derive personal meaning from their learning
experiences, and/or increase their metacognitive skills. These require that
the learner use content-specific language.

  Lists, Charts, and Graphic Organisers - Learners will organise information,

make connections, and note relationships through the use of various graphic
organisers.

 Visual Representations of Information - Learners will use both words and

pictures to make connections and increase memory, facilitating retrieval of
information later on. This "dual coding" helps trainers address classroom
diversity, preferences in learning style, and different ways of "knowing."

 Collaborative Activities - Learners have the opportunity to move and/or

communicate with others as they develop and demonstrate their
understanding of concepts.

As you work through these assessments, think about how each question or activity helps
you to understand the concepts and learning more effectively.

FORMATIVE ACTIVITIES
Learners should answer the following or perform the tasks using the skills and
knowledge being taught during class presentations. Answers should reflect their
understanding of the learning.

Answers have no word limit and each learner should provide their own information
even when group or class activities are performed.

1. What are four (4) types of databases?

Answer:

The databases are to be divided in four categories including;

The first and foremost type of database is commercial off-the-shelf which is
well recognised as COTS database packages. The second kind of data base is to
be named as Object-relational databases. Proprietary databases and Relational
databases are the third and fourth category of databases respectively.

2. Who might clients include?

Answer:

Not only the employees and external organisations, but individuals and
internal departments are also to be included in clients.

3. What do conceptual models demonstrate?

Answer:

Conceptual models not only demonstrate what data objects are to be involved
in a database? But it also demonstrates how the objects are to relate to each
other?. Moreover, these models are likely to demonstrate what rules are
considered to run the data objects?

6

4. What is client feedback?

Answer:

Client feedback is to be defined as conceptual model related information which

is likely to be conveyed to designers so that it can be used to make alterations
in the database; however, the client feedback is not to be given in a manner
which immediately makes it recognisable as relevant to a database or the
present stage of the process of generating a database.

5. What are data structures?

Answer:

Data structures are to be associated as the manner in which the data would
likely to be organised in the database so that queries and searches can be
enabled to be conducted on them.

6. What is attribute normalisation?

Answer:

Attribute normalisation is to be the process which would be undergone to

organise the attribute so that entity types can be ensured to be consistent
along with ensuring all relationships which are based on these would be
consistent.

7. How can the cardinality of relationships be identified?

Answer:

Through subsequent relationships types, the cardinality of relationships can be

identified including;
 Many-to-many
 Many-to-one
 One-to-many
 One -to-one

7

8. What might documentation standards include?

Answer:

Documentation standards would likely to include;

 Audit trails along with data dictionaries and entity-relationship
diagrams.
 International Organisation for Standardization which is known as ISO,
International Electrotechnical Commission called as IEC and Australian
Standards AS standards.
 Naming standards along with Project management templates and
report writing principles
 Moreover, it also includes Version control.

9. What might the database management system include?

Answer:

The database management system would likely to include:

 Distributed which is be known as centralised.
 Online
 Moreover, partitioned geographically or thematically distributed

10. What are validation rules?

Answer:

The rules which are utilized in order to verify and ensure that the data entered
by users in the database meets the required standards that apply prior to save
it are likely to be called validation rules.

11. What will the documentation of the database commonly include?

Answer:

 The documentation of the database would not only likely to include

design parameters documentation, but also the relationship and data
modelling.
 Moreover, data structure diagrams and definitions and rules are also
included in documentation of database.
 Furthermore, reports on functionality and specifications sheets are also
a part of documentation of database.
 Documentation also include user documentation.

12. What should output planning consider?

Answer:

Output planning should not only consider types of outputs, but also consider
format along with Visual display requirements.

13. List five (5) requirements for queries.

Answer:

Requirements which are taken into consideration for queries would likely to
include; application, business, database, network, people in the organisation,
platform, system, programming language and type of database.

14. What information might security plans include?

Answer:

The subsequent information would likely to be included in security plan:

Not only authentication, but authorisation and integrity are to be included.
Along with privacy, security objectives of the organisation are necessary to be
included.

15. What permissions might user requirements for multiple users include?

Answer:

For various users, the subsequent permissions are to be included in the user
requirements;
 Not only the kind of data which can be seen by users, but also queries
which can be made by users are to be included.
 Moreover, report which can be accessed by user and adding
information to the database are included.
 Removing information from the database along with editing
information which is to be kept in the database are to be included.

16. How will user accounts be grouped?

9
ICTDBS502 - Design a database Version 3
Answer:

User accounts would be grouped based on access requirements along with

permissions and authorities.

17. What might database backup and recovery requirements depend on?

Answer:

The database backup and recovery requirements are to be varied depending

on data type, risk levels and compliance requirements.

18. What factors should be considered when developing database backup and
recovery procedures?

Answer:

Development of database backup and recovery procedures would require

subsequent factors to be taken into consideration;
 Not only kind of backup, but frequency of backup is to be considered.
 Who will complete the backups?
 How would the backup be completed?
 Where would backups be located?
 Recovery points that would likely to be created
 Recovery data storage location is to be taken into consideration.

19. How will the database need to be submitted?

Answer:

The database would require to be submitted as an application and fully

functioning and installed item. During submitting the database to the client, it
would be required in order to ensure that they are delivered with the
necessary access details which is to be required to access and approve the
database.

20. How can data redundancy be identified?

10
ICTDBS502 - Design a database Version 3
Answer:

Data redundancy could be identified through normalising data, creating

indexes, searching and data modelling processes.

21. List six (6) database features and functions.

Answer:

The following database features along with functions are to be included;

 Data storage: Databases allows a large amount of complex data to be
stored in searchable, organised and useable manner.
 Data management: The organisation’s data needs would likely to be
managed to use database due to the manner that it is structured and
able to be reported and queried by the organisation.
 Data presentation: Databases makes data able to be presented in a
manner that replies specific queries and displays the information to the
user by the user interface or in their ability to make specific reports of
information in a range of different formats.
 Data security: Databases can also be utilized for delivering a secure
space for data to be organised as per the security policy of organisation.
 The ability for the data to be added, deleted and updated as required:
databases would likely to be set up with permissions so that users can
be allowed to add, delete and update data as per the rules of database.
 Management of organisation’s information requirements: during
databases are to be set up as per the business needs or as per the
specific knowledge, management strategies would be used in order to
control the information needs of the organisation.

22. How can the saleability of databases be managed?

Answer:

The databases’ saleability could be managed by set size databases,

automatically scalable databases, partitions, vertical or horizontal scaling and
the utilization of distributed computer or servers.
