Recognize that substances are classified into

elements and compounds

Code: S7MT-Ig-h-5
To the learners

Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb
you while enjoying the lessons.

1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page
of this module.

4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key
card.
5. Analyze conceptually the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy learning!

Expectations

In this module, you are expected to:

• differentiate elements from compounds based on their composition from the given
chemical names and formulas of elements and compounds;

Brief Introduction Matter

Matter refers to anything Pure

that has mass and occupies space. Substance

This means everything around us is

size. .A kind of matter is considered
a substance if it is made up of one
kind of molecule. These substances When two or more different elements combine
are either element or compound. An chemically in fixed proportion, a new substance
element is composed of only one is formed called compound. Examples are NO3,
type of atom. Examples are N, O, and CO2. It is represented by chemical formula
and He. It is considered as the which tells us the symbols and number of atoms
simplest kind of matter and cannot of each element in its molecule. The components
be changed into other substance by of compounds can be separated by chemical
ordinary means. means.

Activity 1.1 Where Do I Belong?

Objective.
Compare and contrast elements and compounds
Directions:

1. Draw a Venn diagram in your answer sheet.

2. Choose phrases in the box that describe the element and write on the left circle
of the Venn diagram.
3. Choose phrases in the box that describe the compound and write on the right
circle of the Venn diagram.
4. Choose phrases that the element and compound have in common and write in the
intersection of the circle (overlapping area).

Remember
Pure substances are forms of matter that are made up of only one type of atom
or molecule and have a definite and unchanging composition. It can be an element or
compound.

Element is a pure substance composed of only one type of atom or molecule

which cannot be broken down into other substance through physical or chemical
means. It is written in abbreviation called element symbol. Atom is the basic unit of
element.

Periodic table is a tabular arrangement of elements by increasing atomic

number such that elements having similar chemical behavior are grouped in vertical
columns. At present, there 118 elements in the periodic table. Some of these elements
are present in the food we eat which the human body needs to function properly.

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) approves the

names of elements. The IUPAC guidelines in naming elements can be based on name 4 of
discoverer or scientist, mythological figures, astronomical objects, mineral or similar
substance, property of the element, and places or geographical region.

Compound is a pure substance that forms when two or more different elements
(or different atoms) combine chemically in fixed ratio. It can be broken down into simpler
substance by chemical means. The basic unit of compound is molecule.

Chemical formula is a representation that tells us the symbol and number of

atoms of each element present in a molecule of a compound.
