First Aid Basics

(Study Guide)
Introduction
Define the following terms as you watch First Aid Basics or use your student workbook.

1. First Aid- is the immediate care that you give a person with an illness or injury before
rescuers with more advanced training arrive and take over
2. CPR- When person’s heart stops suddenly, receiving CPR can double or even triple the
chances of survival.
3. Responsive- when a person is responsive, speak, move, blink, or other wise react to you when
you tab them and ask, “are you okay”
4. Unresponsive- A person does not move, speak, blink, or otherwise react is unresponsive

5. AED- It’s a lightweight, portable device used to detect


abnormal cardiac rhythms that requires treatment. It can also
deliver electrical shock to convert the rhythms back to normal. 6.
Good Samaritan Law- If you have legal questions about
providing first aid, all states have Good Samaritan law that
protect anyone who gives first aid and CPR.

Assess the scene


1. When should you move an injured person? If the area is unsafe for you or the ill or

normally, you can roll the person onto their side, this may help keep their way open in

Phoning for Help


1. How do you phone for help? First shout for help. If noy one answers and the person
needs immediate care and you have a cell phone, call 9-1-1 and put the phone on speaker
mode.

3. What phrase is stated to access emergency help? When someone is unresponsive

Universal Precautions
1. What should your first aid kit include? PPE, eye protection, and medical gloves.
2. What does PPE protect you from? They help keep you safe from body fluid, such as
blood, saliva, and Urine
3. What type of gloves should you use? You should use the medical gloves.
4. What action should you take when a first aid kit is not available? Use something that
might help
5. What are the first aid actions for contact with body fluids? Use hand sanitizer or washing
hands with soap for 20 seconds

Removing Gloves
1. What are the steps for removing protective gloves? Grip on glove on the outside near the
cuff and peel it down until it come off inside out, then place 2 fingers of your bare hand
inside the cuff of the glove that is still on your other hand.
2. How should you properly dispose protective gloves? If there is blood on the gloves, then
you dispose the gloves in the biohazard waste bag.

Washing Hands
1. What should you do after immediately removing protective gloves? Use hand sanitizer
2. What are the steps to properly washing your hands? Wet your hands with clean running
water with soap, then rub your hand together and scrub all surfaces of hands and fingers
for at least 20 seconds, then dry your hands with paper tower then turn water using paper
tower
