Avogadro’s

Number
Bellateche ikram
M1 chemical engineering
What is the avogadro’s
Number?
• Amedeo Avogadro was an italien
scientist, he gave his name to the
number of particules in a mole.

• Avogadro’s number NA or the

avogadro constant is the number of
atoms per mole of carbon 12 isotope for
atoms.
What’s a mole?
The mole is the unit of measurement for the
amount of a substance as set out by the
International System of Units. Other SUI units of
measurement include kilograms, metres, and
seconds. It’s a very handy way for chemists to
work with huge numbers of atoms or molecules.
Relative Atomic Mass

The mass of avogadro’s

number of particules is
equal to their relative
atomic mass
Relative Atomic Mass
Hydrogen
atoms
The mass of avogadro’s
number of hydrogen
atoms is 1g.

Chlorine
atoms
The mass of
avogadro’s number of
chlorine atoms is
35,5g
Relative molecular mass
For molecules the mass
of avogadro’s number of
particules is equal to
their relative moecular
mass
Relative molecular mass
Hydrogen
atoms
The mass of
avogadro’s number of
hydrogen molecules
or H2 is 2g

Chlorine
Atoms

The mass of avogadro’s

number of chlorine
molecules or Cl2 is 71g
Question ?
If someone asks you :what’s the mass of
avogadro’s number of chlorine particules ?

What’s the mass of

avogadro’s number
of chlorine
particules ?

It’s impossible to answer the question

without the person going into more details
Answer :
If by chlorine particules
they mean chlorine
atoms , the answer is
35,5g

If however by chlorine
particules they mean
chlorine molecules , the
answer is 71g
Hypothesis
• In 1811, Avogadro proposed his hypothesis which states
equal volumes of gases at the same T temperature et P
presure contain the same number of molecules.
• this Hypothesis made it easier to
Perform calculations involving gases
This means that one mole of any gaz
will occupy the same
volume as mole of any other gaz provided that
they are at the same temperature T and
presure P.
The molar volume
• The volume occupied by one mole of a gas is colled: the molar volume .
• Molar volume is measured in decimetres cube per mole (Dm^3/ mol).

At room T et P , the molar volume is

taken as 24,0 dm^3/mol
Exemple:
What is the volume accupied by 4g
of oxygen at room temperature ?

The answer 4g of oxygen gas at

1mole of any is 3dm^3 room T accupies a
gas at room T volume of 4(
occupies 24 24/32) dm^3
dm^3

32g of oxygen 1g of oxygen gas

gas at room T at room T accupies
accupies 24 a volume of 24/32
dm^3 dm^3
Conclusion
Avogadro didn’t discover the number himself— it
was named after him in recognition of his
contributions to chemistry.
Avogadro’s number helps chemists to get around
the problem that every element has a slightly
different mass, or density.
