 A folk dance is a dance developed by people that reflect the life of the people of a certain

The terms "ethnic" and "traditional" are used when it is required to emphasize the cultural roots
of the dance.
 Likewise, what is National Dance? National Dances. National Dances are internationally known,

3.       Describe the different folk dances that you have seen.

ANSWER:

Let’s start with the first one which is:

 SINGKIL - Singkil originated from the Maranao people who inhabit the shores of Lake
Lanao. ... Originally only women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkil, which serves as
either a conscious or unconscious advertisement to potential suitors. The dance takes its
name from the heavy rings worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess.

 Sayaw sa Bangko - Sayaw sa Bangko (“dance on a bench”) is a folk dance from the
Pangasinan province of the Philippines. Performers dance on top of a bench that is
normally six inches wide. Bench Tapew ed dance (dance on top of a bench), is a dance
Which originates from Pangasinan and researched by Jovita Sison. It is performed by a
couple on a narrow bench, inching and hopping from one end to another. Dancer show
skill in staying up the bench As they exchange places by moving Their way around or the
girl thrown in the air while the boy moves to the other end. They do not Compete but
rather complement each other so that no one falls. It is usually performed During town
fiestas
 Tinikling - The Tinikling is said to be named after the long-legged bird called the tikling
in the Philippines. Someone who dances the Tinikling imitates the movements of a
tikling bird (hence, tikling-like) as the bird walks over the grass or dodges bamboo traps
set by Filipino farmers on vast rice fields.

4.       Explain the history and origin of each folk dances.

ANSWER:

 SINGKIL - The Singkíl  originated from the Maranao people who inhabit the shores of Lake
Lanao. It is derived from a story in the Darangen, the Maranao interpretation of the
ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana [indicating the dance’s Hindu spiritual origin]. The name of
the dance itself means “to entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in
your path”. It is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other festive entertainment.
Originally only women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkíl, which serves as either a
conscious or unconscious advertisement to potential suitors. After the ancient origins, the next
reference I found online about the singkil was in the 1950s. The dance became a popularized
Philippine folk dance by the help of historians-dancers-ethnomusicologists, Bayanihan Dance
Company. In particular this dance was researched, interpreted and staged by the
Bayanihan’s Lucrecia Reyes-Urtula, who went on to be named a National Artist of the Philippines
for her contributions to cultural heritage in dance. The Company performed Filipino folk dances
for audiences around the world, even for Ed Sullivan, to much acclaim.

 SAYAW SA BANGKO - The Philippine folk dance Sayaw sa Bangko (literally means Bench
Dance) originated in the Lingayen and Pangasinan of the Pangapisan Tribe and researched by
Jovita Sison, nowadays it is mostly performed during Town Fiestas. It was originally performed
by newlyweds during their wedding feast for their guests, the dance showcase both bride and
groom and how they complement and help each other with the intricate steps making sure they
don`t fall from the bench.

 TINIKLING - According to historical accounts, the Tinikling dance originated during the
Spanish occupation in the Philippines—particularly on the island of Leyte. Rice farmers on
the Visayan Islands usually set up bamboo traps to protect their fields, yet tikling birds dodged
their traps. Locals imitated the birds’ movement, and supposedly, that’s how this dramatic
traditional folk dance was born. However, according to legend, the dance originated during the
Spanish colonial era when locals were ordered by the King of Spain to work on large plantations.
Those who did not follow his orders or worked too slowly were given a punishment: to stand in
between two bamboo poles.
These poles were then clapped together in an effort to beat the Filipino natives’ feet. To escape this
punishment, the Filipinos would jump when the two poles were about to be clapped. This practice of
jumping between the poles eventually transformed from a challenge into an artistic dance.
