NIGERIA YESTERDAY

As I believe to this best of my knowledge, that “behind every history there’s

a story” so is it when it comes to the “HOME” I call Nigeria, many years ago a

country of different race, tongues, culture and tongue was joined together, of which

gives birth to the quote that there’s unity in diversity, the valiant men burdened

themselves with the passion to see their people been free from the hand of the

colonial masters. Many were joyous of the brave step been taken by these Men’s

and few felt this child (country) won’t last long cause it hasn’t been well feed from

its “Mother” what a thought, it seems like a dream come through when the civil

war broke out, the country divided against itself, I quote from the Wikipedia

statistics that 2million Biafra civilians perished from famine during the Nigeria

naval blockade, 2-4 million displaced, almost three million became refugees, what

a disaster! What a waste! What a calamity!!! If a house be divided against itself,

that house cannot stand. But surprisingly the country survived it, and later returned

to its way of life.

Many coups were carried out during this periods of which leads to the1 st

Republic,2nd Republic,3rd Republic and the 4th Republic, many heroes were killed in

the process of fighting and agitating for the return to civil way of life, people like
2
Kenule Saro-wiwa, Fela Anikulapo, and most notably M.K.O Abiola, to mention

but few stood up against all odds, to be a voice for their people. And later the

fourth republic started and fortunately enough, there has been no enough reason for

the military to take over of the Democratic government. And the boat of this 4 th

republic has been on the sea, since 1999.

NIGERIA TODAY

Since the inception of this new era, in the history of Nigeria, can we say things

have changed for the better? Is this where we ought to be? Can we leave where we

are? , hmmm, every stage with its own challenges, but the way it is been managed,

determines the outcome to be seen, the journey has not been easy, from the Niger

Delta avengers to the herders fight, religious fight in the northern part, election

violence’s, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and economic break down, it is painful

when the son is eating bones in the midst of fish, and it is outrageous when the son

of a rich man, is wearing a rag. What is the use of resources that is not judiciously

utilized, or the wealth that is kept inside a cave? A pastor once said and I quote

“when a purpose is undefined, the abuse is inevitable” an average politician will

tell the citizen that they are here to serve the people where as they come to serve

their pockets. Hmmm, when are we going to be free from this, thanks to a leader

that once lived in Nigeria, which made live convenient for the citizen, and

appreciation to those trying and have tried their best, but the realities on ground
3
kept their hands tied. But the main issue is, when are we going to be free from this

constant ASUU strike, ASUP strike, mass sacking of workers, unemployment,

poverty, insecurity, constant hike on food prices, inflation at every market sector,

and bad roads. Can we be the giant of Africa again? This is the present challenge

that country is putting before all its citizens, is there still hope? Can the dry bone

rise again? Yes it can, but do the citizen have what it takes to rise again, it takes

men that are in constant pursuit of success consistently to be successful, the time is

now, to obey the clarion call, putting everyone in a strategic position to rebuild the

broken wall, our #Education system is collapsing, yet the leaders, only saw the

option of sending their children abroad, that is the Nigeria that we are presently, a

country where a love has lost its place among both the poor and the elites, the wall

of our medical insurance has cracked, hundreds dying every day due to lack of

proper treatment, how bad can this be, to worsen the pain the economy has

collapsed, 1$= 411.53, things are falling apart indeed. How come we ended up

being like this? A country that was once flowing of milk and honey, can we go

back to the days where everyone wants to come to our country where there’s

“unity in diversity’’, the today we are seeing is not only because our leaders want it

to be so, but when the citizen refuses to let things go in the path of peace, conflict

has never been far-fetched from those areas.

4
The today we are seeing, is because the people have sold their right

because of money, vote buying has been the order of the day during elections,

peoples life is in jeopardy, just because we are putting our affairs and government

in the hand of visionless leaders, the Refineries have stopped working, NEPA have

been sold out, other main assets have been privatized is this the country our kids

will meet? Shall we continue in this kind of life? Well this questions can only be

answered by the actions of you the reader. You are one of the architect of the

country.

NIGERIA FUTURE

What every society will becomes inn future, lies in the hand of the youths

that are from that society, what this home(country) becomes in the future lies in

my hand and yours, the actions you take are in one way or the other affecting the

society. The greatest damage that can happen to a mind is to have a wrong

mindset, so if the youths of this country believes that there will be a change, so be

it. Because people don’t arrive at a future that is not prepared for, Myles Munroe

of late memory said and I quote that “ success is not a skill, but an attitude” so

what the youth thinks about the future determines what the future will be, when

they work towards it. And being that the future needs to be a good one, the

youths had made a right by venturing into politics, because politics is a major key

that operate the country. The country has remained standing against All odds and
5
storms, but the action of every youth in this challenging time can either be a

solution to the future or a problem to the future, what we become tomorrow, is as

a result of what we’ve done today, and the only way a better future can be

guaranteed for this country is to make sure we see each other as brother, if one

love keeps us together, then the future will be a dream come true, in a way that

every good minded citizen wants it to be. Tribalism, marginalization, racism,

kidnapping and religious war can only be a thing of the past when we learn to

love and accommodate each other. Happy 60th anniversary to Nigeria. Long live

Nigeria.
