EE 133 (ELECTRICAL MACHINES 1)

QUIZ NUMBER 4 (DC MOTORS)

Time duration: 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM (2.0 hours)

(Date: November 27, 2021, BSEE 3A)

Instructions:

1. Answer the following problems and show complete solutions (Note: Use one-half or one-fourth sheet of
short size bond paper for the solution per problem. Write your name in every page and do not write anything
at the back). Note: Passing score = 60%.

2. Download the problems through our MS Teams. Put on your video and focus yourself on the camera in
a way you can be seen while answering the problem. Submit or turn-in your work through MS teams after
the allotted time had expired. Late papers will not be accepted

PROBLEM SOLVING:10 points per problem. Show complete solution

Problem #1: A shunt motor takes 40 amperes at 112 volts under full load. When running without load at
the same speed, it takes 3 amperes at 106 volts. The field resistance is 100 ohms and the armature
resistance is 0.125 ohm. What horsepower does the motor deliver at full load?

Problem #2: A 440-V long shunt compound motor has an armature resistance of 0.74 ohm and a series
field resistance of 0.25 ohm. The torque developed is 180 lb-ft when the armature current is 45 amperes.
Calculate the new torque if the armature current is 60 amperes and the flux is increased by 10%.

Problem #3: A dc series motor when running at 800 rpm draws a current of 100 amperes from a source
of 230 volts. The series field resistance and the armature circuit resistance are 0.10 ohm and 0.15 ohm
respectively. Calculate the speed at which the motor runs at a line current of 70 amperes.

Problem #4: A 220-V compound motor is connected short-shunt. At full-load, the current in the series
field is 60 A. Series field resistance = 0.05 ohm; shunt field resistance = 109 ohms; armature resistance
= 0.2 ohm; total brush drop = 2 V; full-load iron and friction losses = 1,230 watts. Calculate the full-load
efficiency.

Problem #5: A dc series motor having a resistance of 1.0 ohm between terminals runs at 800 rpm at 200
V with a current of 15 A. At what speed will it run when connected in series with a 5-ohm resistance, the
current being maintained at 15 A?

Problem #6: A 500-volt shunt motor running at 720 rpm takes an armature current of 50 A. The effective
armature resistance is 0.4 ohm. What resistance must be placed in series with the armature to reduce the
speed to 600 rpm, the torque remaining constant.

Problem #7: A long shunt compound motor takes current of 24 A at 400 V supply. The armature, series
field and shunt field resistances are 0.6 ohm, 0.4 ohm and 100 ohms respectively. The iron losses of the
motor are 500 watts. Calculate the overall efficiency of the motor.

Problem #8: The field and armature resistance of a 220-V series motor are 0.2 ohm and 0.1 ohm
respectively. The motor takes 30 A of current while running at 700 rpm. If the total iron and friction losses
are 350 W, determine the motor efficiency.

Problem #9: A 220-V, 1.5 kW, 900 rpm separately-excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 2.5
ohms and it draws current of 8 A at rated load. Assume losses remain constant between no-load and full-
load conditions, what will be the no-load speed of the motor?

Problem #10: A dc shunt motor takes 2.5 A at no-load from a 440-V supply. The shunt field current is
0.8 A and the armature resistance is 1.2 ohms. If the motor takes 32 A on full-load from 440-V supply,
calculate the BHP of the motor.
