Environmental Protection

Unfortunately, our planet, the earth is under threat and it is our fault.

What are the major problems?

- the rainforests are dying
- rare plants and animals are disappearing
- rivers and seas are being contaminated
- crops are failing to grow because of drought or flood
- people are dying of hunger  famine
- the air is being polluted  air pollution
- chimneys of factories give off black smoke, toxic fumes

One of the main problems are the destruction of rainforests because:

- they are home to a lot of species and to millions of people
- they clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and give out oxygen
- if trees are cut down, birds and animals lose their homes

The other important topic is water pollution:

- factories pollute our rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals
- oil tankers release thick, black oil into our oceans
- domestic waste is poured into our seas

Air pollution is another vital issue:

- cars and factories give off fumes
- ozone-hole is growing

Is pollution harmful to our health?

Definitely. A lot of people suffer from respiratory problems, chronic cough, pollen allergy,
breathing problems, stomach illnesses. It can cause lung cancer, skin cancer and leukaemia as well.

What should we do to protect our environment?

We should plant trees, adopt animals, create parks for endangered species.
We shouldn’t throw away litter on streets for example: cigarette packets, bottles, beer cans, paper
tissues.
We should organize a selective garbage collection. It means you collect rubbish (paper, plastic,
metal, glass) selectively/separately.
We shouldn’t use vehicles so much we should go on foot, walk, or go by bicycle instead.
We shouldn’t drop batteries into dustbins.

What is recycling?
It is an ideal way to get rid of the rubbish. By recycling the important materials are used again. In
this way we can save raw-materials and energy as well. For example: multi-use plastic cans and
bottles can be refilled twenty-five times. So they are reused and environment-friendly.

What is greenhouse effect?

There is an ozone layer around the world which is becoming very thin. The task of the ozone layer
is to intercept the dangerous UV-rays. But the fumes and other gases get into the air and destroy/
damage the ozone layer. The destruction of the ozone layer is leading to climatic changes and what
is known as the greenhouse effect. As a result, the UV-radiation is very high in summer. So it is not
advisable to sunbathe at midday because you can get skin cancer.
