B- Professional Information

1- Overall Aims of the Course:

The course aims to provide a thorough education in Periodontics for an improved


understanding of periodontal diseases. The course will cover the recognition and
understanding of the clinical manifestations of periodontal pocket and trauma from
occlusion and their significant role in periodontal disease progression as well as prognosis
and comprehensive treatment plan of various forms of periodontal disease. Also, the
interaction between periodontal disease and systemic conditions. In addition , it will focus
on the clinical features of various forms of periodontal diseases with emphasis on rationales
and principles of non-surgical therapeutic modalities.

2- Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs):

Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:


a- Knowledge and Understanding:
a1- Review patient data information and radiographs to reach diagnosis and
treatment.
a2- Identify the factors which influence the development of different periodontal
diseases and its relation to bone loss pattern.
a3- Recognize the clinical manifestations, histopathological features of periodontal
pockets and its significance as related to progressive periodontal diseases.
a4- Identify correlation between periodontal diseases and general health of the
patient.
a5- Distinguish the factors involved in the prognosis of periodontal treatment.
a6- Describe the different phases of treatment plan.
a7- Explain the rationale for the use of chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of
periodontal diseases.

b- Intellectual Skills:
b1- Analyze and interpret clinical data relevant to periodontal diseases.
b2- Formulate a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan.

b3- Prepare alternative treatment plans according to the patients’ needs to achieve
optimum results.
b4- Select the proper chemotherapeutic agents used for treatment of various
periodontal diseases.
b5- Evaluate the prognosis outcome of different periodontal diseases.

c- Professional and Practical Skills:


c1- Practice proper infection control measures.
c2- Plan, design and execute practical activities using non surgical procedures
appropriate to periodontal therapy.
c3- Plan and provide emergency relief of pain and infection related to periodontal
condition.
c4- Recognize ethical and safety issues which are pertinent to periodontal treatment.
c5- Modify treatment plan in relation to the patients’ risk factors.

d- General and Transferable Skills:


d1- Develop effective written and oral communication skills and establish appropriate
patient dentist relationship.
d2- Manage time effectively in obtaining data from patients.
d3- Work through a team, and accept criticism.
d4- Develop skills in collecting, summarizing and presenting information.

Periodontal pocket: Classification, clinical features, pathogenesis. Week No.1

Periodontal pocket: Histopathology and mechanism of tissue destruction. Week No.2

Periodontal abscess: Definition, etiology, clinical features and differential Week No.3
diagnosis.

Periodontal response to external forces: Adaptive capacity of priodontium to Week No.4


occlusal forces.

Trauma from occlusion (primary and secondary). Week No.5

Bone loss and patterns of bone destruction. Week No.6

Chronic periodontitis: Etiology, clinical features and radiographic findings. Week No.7

Aggressive periodontitis: Etiology, clinical features, radiographic findings. Week No.8

Influence of systemic conditions on the periodontium. Week No.9

Determination of prognosis: Overall versus individual tooth prognosis. Week No.10

Treatment plan: Master plan and sequence of therapeutic procedures. Week No.11
Anti-infective therapy: Systemic administration of antibiotics. Week No.12

Anti-infective therapy: Local delivery agents. Week No.13

Host modulation therapies. Week No.14

Final examination. Week No.15
