The Cell Membrane

Cell Membranes are

Selectively Permeable

TRANSPORT ACROSS MEMBRANE

Membranes act as physical barriers between the organelles of a cell and its cytoplasm
and its surrounding environment.
1.Impermeable – substances do not pass through the membrane
2.Permeable – both solute and solvent can pass through
3.Semipermeable – membrane permeable to solvent but prevents solutes passage
4. Selectively Permeable – if membrane allows the passage of solvent and some
selected solutes.
FUNCTIONS OF PLASMA MEMBRANE

1. Provides shape to the cell

Make connections
How are these two things connected?

What connects these concepts?

ACTIVE TRANSPORT PASSIVE TRANSPORT

So, just how does ANYTHING enter
and exit cells?
H2O, CO2 and small freelycross the cell membrane
ions
following the natural laws of diffusion
Molecules move from areas of high
Diffusion concentration to areas of low
continues concentration
until This is called…
Equilibrium moving with or down the
is reached concentration gradient
Water is
special….
The diffusion of water, across a membrane, down
the concentration gradient is called
OSMOSIS

A simple rule of osmosis is that Solutes,

concentrated inside or outside of the cell,
will draw the water in that direction
Types of Osmosis
TO BE WRITTEN
❖ Osmosis is of two types
IN BIOLOGY
• Endosmosis
REGISTER
• Exosmosis

❖ Endosmosis – Osmotic entry of water in to the cell or system

Endosmosis
❖ Exosmosis – Osmotic withdrawal of water from a cell or system

❖ When we place the cell in higher concentration of solute solution

the water comes out of the cell by a process called exosmosis.

❖ When we place the cell in lower concentration of solute solution

the water enters in to the cell by a process called endosmosis.
