1. Road Making Materials (30%) [LO 1, LO 3]

a. Explain about road classification and why it is needed.
b. Explain what are the advantages and disadvantages of using dense graded
aggregates, well graded aggregates, and uniformly graded aggregates. Also, explain
how the usage of each grading affect the pavement design.
c. Write 600-700 words essay (based on academic sources) to explain about recycled
asphalt pavement (RAP), including how can we utilize it in road construction, and
what advantages and disadvantages can we get from it.
d. Explain what is an anti-stripping additive that can be used for asphaltic mixture and
write a 300-400 words essay on how can we use that additive on the asphaltic
mixture and what advantages and disadvantages can we get from it.
2. New Flexible Pavement Design (40%) [LO 2]
Student ID Number (NIM): ABCDEFGHIJ

A new road section is soon to be opened for traffic in the beginning of AB. This road is an
arterial road with 2 lane 1 way. This road is designed to serve the traffic for DE years. The
pavement will be done in two stages. Stage I is 5 years and Stage II is the rest. At the end of
stage 1, it is assumed that the pavement will have 40% remaining capacity. The traffic survey
has been conducted in 2014 and give the data as follows:

Passenger Car (E = 0,0004) 2800 Veh

Big Bus (E = 0.3006) 175 Veh

Light Truck and Bus (E = 0.2174) IJ Veh
Heavy Truck (E = 5.0264) 80 Veh
3 Axel Heavy Truck (E = 2.7416) 35 Veh

The predicted traffic growth rates during construction are:

Light Vehicle (<5 ton) : 5%
Heavy Vehicle (>5 ton) : 4%
and during its lifetime are:
Light Vehicle (<5 ton) : 9%
Heavy Vehicle (>5 ton) : 8%

The DCP test was conducted to estimate the strength of the subgrade. The DCP results have
been converted to CBR for 20 locations, which are:

The material used for each pavement layers are as follow:

Surface : Laston MS-744; a = 0,40
Base : Batu Pecah CBR 100%; a = 0,14
Sub Base : Sirtu / Pitrun CBR 80%; a = 0,13

Average slope =5% and Rainfall 800 mm/year.

Please make assumption if any other data needed. Use given equation and table (Nomogram
No.1).

Question:
a. Design flexible pavement with Component Analysis Method.
b. Give three alternatives to maximize each layer.
c. Sketch the layer of three alternative.

3. Pavement Overlay (10%) [LO 2]

From a site investigation, the condition of the existing pavement is as follow:

15 cm Laston MS-744; a = 0,40; Performance: 70%

20 cm Batu Pecah CBR 100%; a = 0,14; Performance: 75%

30 cm Sirtu/Pitrun CBR 70%; a = 0,13; Performance: 80%

Design the required overlay with Component Analysis Method and sketch the pavement layer.
Use ITP from question no. 2.

4. Rigid Pavement (20%) [LO 2]

Student ID Number (NIM): ABCDEFGHIJ

Design a rigid pavement without steel reinforcement with given data:

CBR subgrade = 7%
Tensile strength = 4,0 MPa (f’c = 285 kg/cm2, cylindrical)
Subbase material = stabilized
Friction Coefficient between concrete slab and base course () = 1,3
Shoulder = yes (concrete)
Dowel = yes
Average daily traffic data :
- Private vehicle = 2540 vehicles/day
- Bus = HIJ vehicles/day
- Truck with 2 small axle = 500 vehicles/day
- Truck with 2 large axle = 754 vehicles/day
- Truck with 3 axles = 80 vehicles/day
- Trailer = 75 vehicles/day
Traffic growth rate = 6.5% per year
Service age = DE years
2 lanes, 1 way, arterial road

Please make assumption if any other data needed.
