The play is an overview and accessed idea of the course, causes and consequences of the first world
war to mankind in general and specifically on education both in the world and in Cameroon. This play
which has two main settings begins first at SARAJEVO, the capital of BOSNIA with the killing of the
Serbian prince by name Arch DUKE FRANCIS FERDINAND and wife SOPHIA CHOTEH by a 19-year-old
Serbian student called GRANVILLO PRINCIP. The second main setting takes place in Cameroon
following the attack of German officials from the Neighboring west and equatorial African colonies.

{Stage Director}
ACT ONE
Scene 1
Location: SARAJEVO – BOSNIA Date: 28 JUNE
1914
(The death of Arch Duke FRANCIS FERDINAND and wife SOPHIA CHOTEH)

This was the immediate cause of the first world war. This incident occurred on the 28 of June
1914 at SARAJEVO, the capital of BOSNIA by a 19-year-old Serbian student by name
GRANVILLO PRINCIP who belong to a Serbian secret society called CRNA RUKA meaning the
BLACK HAND which was founded in 1911.

“….The scene we just saw is an ideal overview of how Arch Duke Francis Ferdinand and wife
Sophia Choteh was murdered. This will take us to the next scene which will show us the
immediate reaction of the Austrian delegation of the death of their Prince…”
{Stage Director}

Scene 2
(Report of the death of the Duke and wife)
Immediately after the death of the Duke and wife, the report reached the Austrian
delegation. With the support of Germany, Austria passed a 48hours Ultimatum to Serbia
regarding that; Serbia was to dismiss all the officials that Austria did not like, Serbia was to
suppress all societies organizing Anti-Austrian Propaganda and the Austrian police and
officials were to enter Serbia without any obstruction. The third ultimatum was outrightly
rejected by Serbia. This further led to the declaration of war by Austria to Serbia on the 28 of
July 1914 one month after the death of the duke and wife.

“….Due to the rejection of the ultimatum by Serbia from Austria, it sparked clashes the two
counties as seen and this led to the outcome of this first world war. This therefore takes us to
the next scene which is the war scene….”
{Stage Director}
Scene 3
(WAR SCENE)
As a result of the rejection of the Ultimatum by Serbia, Austrian troops forcefully matched to
Serbia in war aims. This disrupted many activities some of which is mainly the disruption of
Education. It also led to the death of many and countless number of people who were
injured.

“….The previous scene gave us a dramatic explanation of how the rejection of the ultimatum
generated into a global conflict. After the declaration of war in Europe, German Cameroon
from three ends as will be seen in the next scene….”
{Stage Director}

ACT TWO
Scene 1
Location: CAMEROON
(Attack on German Cameroon)
Before the outcome of the war, Europe was divided into two broad camps called the TRIPLE
ALLIANCE and the TRIPLE ENTENTE. In support of the Triple Entente camp, British forces from
Nigeria, French forces from Equatorial Guinea and Belgian forces from Congo attacked
German Cameroon from neighboring West and Equatorial African Colonies.

“….As we all have seen how German Cameroon was attacked from three different angles. We
now go to the next scene which will show us an interplay on How Education too was
disrupted in Cameroon and its impact.
{Stage Director}
Scene 2
(Disruption of Education in Cameroon)
The fighting in Cameroon disrupted both the Western and indigenous system of Education
that was practiced during that era. Some of this indigenous education practiced in Cameroon
was Farming and Hunting.

“….With your wonderful time spent in watching this episodes of the first world war, I hereby
say we have come to an end of the play. Thank you once more for your keen attention.

HOW BENEFICIAL WAS WORLD WAR ONE ON EDUCATION
1) It led to the creation of the league of Nation;
The league of Nation which was created in 1919 and went operational in 1920
after the first world war as a world body to maintain world peace and security
promoted education by creating an extra organization to promote education in the
world.
2) It led to the growth of Nationalism;
Nationalism is the political awareness and consciousness of independence
that cut across European states after the first world war. Nationalism promoted
Education in that people became politically educated about their freedom and
independence from their colonial masters.
3) It also increased the importance of women in the world;
This can be acknowledged by the fact that women began to hold positions in
active service which were formerly controlled by men.
