APPENDIX A
1. SCOPE
The document covers the procedures to be followed in handling the individual coated pipe
lengths for purposes of transporting, storing and assembly of the pipelines. The works
procedures covering specific details of the fit up, welding and field joints of the pipe
connections are provided elsewhere
3. RESOURCES REQUIRED
4. PROCEDURE
4.1 General
Each individual pipe is to be allocated a simple, unique number that identifies it
from all other pipe lengths. This number will serve as a reference for tracking all
records relating to the manufacture, corrosion coating and weight coating of the
pipe and all welding and field jointing activities during double jointing and final
assembly operations. The number is to be indelibly and visibly marked on the
weight coat in the centre of the pipe on the two opposite sides.
Pipes to be received complete with all material and test certificates traceable to
the piping material to which it represents.
When weighing pipe lengths, a calibrated load cell is installed between the lifting
sling and the crane’s hook. Once the pipe has been lifted and steadied, the load
is read off the load cell’s display, converted as per the calibration chart and
recorded.
Pipe lengths to be swept clean internally prior to installation.
Special care to be taken on final assembly line to keep pipes clean and dry
internally.
Set up and stabilize crane within safe working radius for the load and reach.
Weight coated single pipe will be lifted by a purpose made spreader with slings
positioned to maintain the required balance.
The stability and orientation of suspended pipe lengths is to be controlled by
riggers holding onto light tag lines.
Obtain the safe handling, spanning and stacking arrangement as advised by the
supplier for pipes that are uncoated, coated and weight coated.
Avoid overloading and check the stability of the trailer during all phases of
loading/off loading.
Ensure the pipes are properly supported by timber planks, chocks and dunnage
to prevent high point loads, crushing and bending.
Clear stacking area including space for general access area and crane swinging
arc.
Proper ground preparation and load spreading measures to take place before
stacking pipes in storage.
Construct storage beds or earth windrows to support pipe stacks and provide
adequate means of access for lifting gear and drainage.
Clearly demarcate storage areas.
Receive, offload and neatly stack weight coated pipe lengths delivered from
supplier in groups of similar lengths.
Provide dunnage between pipes to prevent localized crushing of the weight coat.
Pipe requiring particular attention (repair etc.) to be separated from the main
stacks.
Lift first pair of pipe lengths and place on launchway roller supports.
Lower pipelines down launchway (under its own weight or by rigging) until rear
end lines up within work station #1.
Add next lengths of pipeline onto awaiting roller supports.
Fit up and carry out the root weld, filler weld and capping weld to connect the two
pipe lengths in work station #1.
Lower pipelines down launchway until rear end lines up within work station #1.
Add next lengths of pipeline onto awaiting bogeys.
Fit up and carry out the root weld, filler weld and capping weld in work station #1
to connect these lengths to the pipeline.
Lower pipelines down launchway until rear end lines up within work station #1.
Add next lengths of pipeline onto awaiting bogeys.
Repeat the above process.
