LABORATORY ACTIVITY 10: GRADED (50 POINTS)

Damped Oscillations

I. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

Differentiate underdamped, overdamped, and critically damped motion STEM_GP12PM-IId-28

II. MATERIAL
PhET Interactive Simulation – Wave on a String

III. DIAGRAM

IV. PROCEDURE
1. Open the PhET interactive simulation WAVE ON A STRING.
2. Click Oscillate in the upper left corner.
3. Then, click Loose End in the upper right corner.
4. Slide the amplitude to maximum at the bottom part of
the simulation.

5. Move the slider for Damping in the following positions:

Undamped oscillation/ Simple harmonic motion Overdamped oscillation

Underdamped oscillation Critically damped oscillation

6. Take a print screen for oscillations above. Crop the print screen like the one in Part III. Paste the
cropped print screen photo in Part V.

VI. FOLLOW-UP QUESTION

1. Differentiate the types of damped oscillation.
➢ The distinction between the three types of damped oscillation is that the undamped oscillation produces
higher waves.

2. Based on the simulation, how would a car bounce after a bump under each of these conditions?
➢ overdamping
The automobile would sway a little.

➢ underdamping
The car is bouncing continuously.

➢ critical damping
The bounces and skid afterwards.

3. Give a real-world example for each damped oscillation.

➢ overdamped oscillation
Battery

➢ b. underdamped oscillation
Basketball

➢ c. critically damped oscillation
