Doing Action Research: An overview

Every teacher is an action researcher. Everyone can do it. Teachers ans student can do it
together.

This episode focuses on doing action research as one of the roles of the teachers. Every
teacher should take interest to know how the students learn, wants to make innovations in the
curriculum and desires to improve teaching practice. In order to achieve these, a teacher has to
action research on the everyday practical problems. These problematic situations and observed
discrepancies emerge between what is intended and what actually occurs in the classroom.

You must have experienced in your pat subjects, doing some activities or accomplishing
tasks similar to an action research. There are activities that required you to do Reflection an
Make Action or the other way around. Schon (1987) Reflection in Action or Reflection on Action
as two different things.
Perhaps Your mentor teacher has already done an Action Research. Now is the
opportunity for you to participate and assist in ways that you are cable of doing.
Here is what you will do.

Action research seems easy and familiar, since teaching seems to be full of problematic
situations and that the teacher has a responsibility of finding solution for everyday problems in
the school, hence teachers should do action research. This is an existing part of being a teacher, a
problem solver!

1. What significant ideas or concepts have you learned about action research?
I learned that, action research is the process for improving educational practices and
develops reflection practices based on the interpretations made by participants. Also it
helps to understand what is happening in our classroom and identified changes that
improve teaching and learning.
2. Have you realized that there is a need to be an action researcher as a future teacher?
Yes ✓ No____. If yes, complete the sentence below.

I realized that there is a need to be an action researcher as a future a teacher

because there is a great need for teachers to impact their professional development which
in the long run impacts on their proficiency. It ensures that a practical solution into
whatever social situation is found. It is a significant tool in ensuring that the teacher
understands his/her practice, ways of improving the same, enable him/her understands the
ways in which the person is able to understand changes from outside and enable one to
improve the practice through changing the outside.

OBSERVE

From what teaching principles of the theories can this problem be anchored?
 I have observed and noticed that Action Research begins with the problem or a
problematic situation.
Write an example of a problematic situation that you have observed and notices.

The problematic situation that I had observed and notice is that students
that won’t pay attention during class session. I also observed the child that is
regularly losing focus during challenging task. It is very annoying when you have
students who can’t seem to listen like they can’t seem to follow directions or even
pay attention to you .

REFLFECT

What have I realized? What do I hope to achieve?

I realized that every teaching learning problem, there is a solution.
Write a probable solution to the problematic situation above

PLAN

What strategies, activities, innovations can I employ to improve the situation or

solve the problem?
As a future action researcher I can plan for an appropriate intervention like
providing some other tips or strategies how the students catch their attention like include
physical activity, remove visual distractions, play memory games and adjust time frames.

ACT

If I conduct or implement my plan, what can be its title?

If will implement my doable plan in the future, title would be Increasing the

Discipline – Improving Classroom Management through

Action Research: A Professional Development Plan
Munir Moosa Sadruddin

Abstract

Action research is an effective plan for the professional development of teachers. It helps
practitioners’ to improve their teaching skills. This research paper examines the strategies used
by the researcher to maintain discipline in classroom through action research. The paper
determines whether punishment and de-motivation are better reinforcing tool to maintain
discipline and whether there is a relation between punishment and de-motivation with learners’
behavior. The teacher identified the areas of improvement in maintaining classroom discipline.
For this particular research, Individual Action Research Plan was adopted. A professional plan
was developed and implemented using Skinnerian model of discipline (1930-1955) to maintain
discipline in classroom through positive reinforcement instead of punishment. The sampling
consisted of 60 students (30 males and 30 females) of grade 9-10. The data was collected
through personal observations, reflective diary and audio recordings. The study concludes that
there is a definite relationship between punishment and de-motivation with learners’ behavior.
The students were more relaxed when the positive reinforcement was adopted and when the
routine plan was made keeping in mind the interest of the students. They were more engaged in
class when the punishment and demotivation were avoided. Positive reinforcement, substituting
punishment and implementing students’ opinion helped a lot in maintaining discipline and in
improving learners’ behavior. The action research helped the researcher to maintain classroom
management through effective discipline practice.
