MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

Media - combination of physical objects used to communicate or mass communicate, or mass


communication through physical objects such as radio, tv, computers, film.

Information - details, data, news

Literacy - knowledge or ability

Media and Information Literacy - enables people to interpret and make informed judgements as
users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and producers of information
and media messages in their own right.

Media Literacy - ability to read, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of
media forms ; ability to decode, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of
forms.

Information Literacy - abilities to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate,
effectively use and communicate information in its various forms.

Technology Literacy - ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate,
evaluate, use and create information.

Digital Literacy - ability to read and interpret media to reproduce data and images through digital
manipulation.

Communication – exchange of information between people

Message – refer to any form of communication

Interpersonal Communication – communication between two persons, whether they are verbal or
non-verbal

Mass Communication – configured to create, produces and dissemble media text to mass audience

Types of Communication

Mediated Interpersonal Communication – you cannot and need not talk face to face
Interpersonal Communication – people communicate face to face

Organizational Communication – people communicate differently in a working environment

Messages – public communication involves one person communicating to a large number of


people

2. ENCODING – is how you compose your sentence as you communicate

3. TRANSMITTING – the actual act of sending the message

4. CHANNELS – more complex messages

5. DECODING – the receivers translates the sources through ideas so they can have meaning

6. RECEIVER – the one who gets the message

7. FEEDBACK – is the response
