In this semester, semester 7 students are required to make a mini project that
gave us a chance to learn and study the professional development of companies that
apply occupational safety and health at workplace. For our mini project, we were
given a chance to study the M&E Services Rites Daisis Sdn Bhd background and their
ways of handling OSH at the company.
Moreover, we deeply indebted to our MEM603 lecturer, Dr. Farrahshaida
Mohd Salleh that plays an important role in helping to improve and guide us in many
ways during this pandemic COVID-19 hit the world. Without her help, we were
unable to finish this mini project with flying colors. This gratitude also given towards
the School of Engineering for giving us the opportunities to study more about the
occupational safety and health (OSH) at industry.
Lastly, I would like to give our deepest gratitude to those who have directly
and indirectly guide us in writing this mini project. This gratitude includes our family
members, fellow classmates, and batch mates for helping and gave guidance to
provide necessary information to make this mini project was a success.

1
1.3 Organizational Structure

2
1.4 Nature of Business
Adaptation and Adjustment to the industry are important because it is the key to
well communicate with other staffs and working environment. On my first day of
internship on 9th August 2021, I reported to my training at Rites Daisis Sdn Bhd office,
and the staff briefed me about company rules and few important thinks before I went to
the mechanical department workplace.
After several procedures of registration session as a practical student, I was placed
in the mechanical department under the supervision of the Engineer Manager, En.
Norashid bin Ramli. During a meeting with my supervisor, he gave me a briefing about
the organization and how it works. I had been asked to support other mechanical staffs at
early of my starting practical before being allowed to handle any project. Rites Daisis Sdn
Bhd normal working hours is started from 9.00a.m until 6:00p.m. The break time is from
1.00 pm until 2 pm considerably.
The communication with other staffs is mainly used Bahasa Malaysia although
sometimes they are using the English language for engineering terms and some
professional activities that involved with contractors. The staffs were welcoming me
nicely although I was the internship student in this section.
Besides, the working environment at training was very different from the
environment in the classes. We have to be more disciplined and focused on the work
environment with a good attitude. I need to increase my effort to learn something new and
find any possible solutions to the problem. I have learned many things and knowledge in
the management of mechanical department and also able to adapt little to my study
related Mechanical Engineering course at my campus.
In every industry, they will have 5S concept just to maintain the organization of
the company in the good condition. 5S engages people using 'Standards' and ‘Discipline'.
The 5 Steps are as follows:
- Sort: Sort out & separate that which is needed & not needed in the area.
- Straighten: Arrange items that are needed so that they are ready & easy to use. Clearly
identify locations for all items so that anyone can find them & return them once the task is
completed.
- Shine: Clean the workplace and equipment on a regular basis to maintain standards &
identify defects.
- Standardise: Revisit the first three of the 5S on a frequent basis.
- Sustain: Keep the rules to maintain the standard and continue to improve every day.

2.1 Safety Signs

Safety signs were placed at all hazard areas such as the workshop area and
construction site in order to deliver safety information and provide instructions to
the worker as a guidance in case of any emergency happens while conducting the
machine or while doing their work. Furthermore, different colour that was display
on the safety sign delivers different meaning.

Figure 3: Types of Safety Signs

Firstly, Red colour are required to be used involving prohibition that concerns
with dangerous behaviour such as ‘No Smoking’ sign. Meanwhile, Yellow colour
reflects as warning sign that more concern in precautions behaviour and showing
dangerous locations. Next is blue colour are needed to be used on any activities
that required specific behaviour or action such as ‘Safety Boots Must Be Worn’
sign. Moreover, green colour focuses on emergency exit signs that helps people
in evacuating a building and first aid.

4
2.2 Safety and personal protective equipment (PPE)

Figure 4: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Hazards that exist in workplace came in many different forms and by controlling
it may help to protect employees and reduce or eliminate hazards to greatest
extent possible (Reese, 1999). Therefore, ways to reduce the hazards exposure
while working was wearing a proper personal protection equipment as shown on
Figure 4. This equipment needs to be worn while going to site and within the
maintenance area at the company. A proper PPE equipment need to be wear
based on its working conditions such as safety harness need to be used when
doing work at high place and safety glasses need to be worn when handling
works that involving dust particles. Meanwhile, employer is advice to guide
employee and provide a proper training on the care and use of the PPE to ensure
that the company can move towards zero accidents at workplace.
Furthermore, before wearing any PPE equipment. The workers need to ensure
that the equipment fits and comfortable when wearing it which, to ensure that the
level of protection that need to be supplied are able to achieve and reduce any
accidents from occur. This is because the PPE either safely covered or
dangerously exposed the employee that using it (Reese, 1999).

5
2.3 Safety and health policy at workplace

M&E Services Rites Daisis Sdn Bhd working area involve different section,
which each sector applied different safety and health policy. This is because each
sections have different level of hazards that the employee might face while
working. One of the sections was corporate that involves in doing all the
documentation of the work. Firstly, the working area was organized by using the
lean manufacturing methodology, which is the 5S systems. This system was to
reduce the difficulties in deciding the needs of necessary items and the non-
necessary items that makes working area function better (Michalska, 2007).
Figure below shows the 5S that was apply in the company.

Figure 5: 5S System

Next, the temperature of working area set at the most comfortable point, which
is between 20-26 degree Celsius (E.Grandjean, 1988). This was to reduce any
discomfort and cause an excessive amount of humidity than the required value.
Furthermore, proper manual handling when carrying heavy object were highlight in
the office to reduce any accidents or injuries while conducting their work by
employer providing a proper training. Lastly, mechanical work equipment such as
the paper shredders are being use based on supplier instructions to prevent from
any impromptu accidents occur while using the machine (Department of
Occupational Safety and Health, 1996).

5.4 Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA)

PDCA is the methods to facilitate the control in business activities, such as
production control and quality control. The cycle of a management action in an
organization is started with planning where the action/job is done accordance to
the plan and the result is checked. If there is lacked on the plan and resulted, the
target or method will be improved for the next cycle(job). Effort to continuously
improve the operation by repeating the PDCA will give the positive and benefits at
the end. These PDCA are performed in sequence and upon completion of one cycle,
the last ‘Act’ will be linked to the next PDCA cycle. These repeating PDCA in every
round will lead to continual improvement of operations. This PDCA has been
employed in international standard such as International Organization for
Standard (ISO) 9000 series and ISO 14000 series, and Japanese Standard such as
JIS Q 15001. The Occupational Safety and Health Management System also utilize
the PDCA cycle for continual risk reduction by identifying the main causes of
danger and performing risk assessments.
