QUARTER 3 WEEK 2
Learning Competency: Solves problems involving permutations
(M10SP-lllb-1)

MISSION POSSIBLE!

Answer each permutation completely. Show you solution!

1. A teacher wants to assign 4 different task to her 4

students. In how many possible ways can she do it?

2. In how may different ways can 5 bicycles be parked if

there are 7 available parking spaces?

3. How may distinguishable permutation are possible with

all the letters of the word ELLIPSES?

4. Find the number of different ways that a family of 6 can

be seated around circular table with 6 chairs.

5. There are 8 basketball teams competing fot the top 4

standing in order to move up to the semi-finals. Find the
number of possible rankings of the four top teams.

6. A Mathematics classroom has 10 desks. If there are 6

students in Mathematics class, how many different
ways can the students choose desks?

WHAT IS PERMUTATION?
Permutation – is a mathematical technique that determines the
( 7−r ) !=6
number of possible arrangements in a set when the order of ( 7−r ) !=3 × 2×1 (find the factor of 6 in decending order)
arrangements matters. ( 7−r ) !=3 !
Example 1.
7−r=3 (omit the factorial sign (!))
In how many different ways can we arrange five blouses in 7−3=r
a counter? 4=r
Solution: P=n!
P=5 !
P=5 × 4 × 3× 2× 1
P=120 Example 5.
Example 2. If P ( n ,3 )=60 , find the value of n.
How many arrangement can be made if there are seven
digits? Solution: P ( n , r )=n(n−1)(n−2)
Solution: P=n!
P=7 ! 60=n(n−1)¿)
(find the factor of 60 in decending order)

P=7 × 6 ×5 × 4 ×3 × 2×1 5 × 4 ×3=n( n−1)(n−2)

P=5 , 040
(substitute the factors of 60 in n) n=5 ( n−1 )=4
( n−2 )=3
n=4 +1
n=3+2
n=5 n=5
Example 6.
Find the value of n. If P ( n , 4 )=3 , 024 .
Solution:
P ( n , r )=n( n−1)(n−2)( n−3)
(find the factor of 3,024 in decending order) 3,024=n(n−1)¿ )(n−3)

9 × 8× 7 ×6=n(n−1)(n−2)(n−3)
