ANIMAL AND PLANT SOURCES OF DRUGS:
PLANT SOURCES:
· Plant sources is the oldest source of drugs.

· Most of the drugs in ancient times were derived from plants.

· Almost all part of the plants are used i.e leaves ,roots,stem,bark and fruits.

LEAVES:
· The leaves of Digitalis Purpurae are the source of Digitoxin and Digoxin
,which are cardiac glycosides.

· Leaves of Eucalyptus give oil of eucalyptus which is important component of

cough syrup.

· Tobacco leaves gives nicotine.

FLOWERS:
· Poppy papaver somniferum gives morphine .

· Vinca rosea gives vincristine and vinblastine.

· Rose gives rose water used as tonic.

FRUITS:
· Seena pod gives anthracine( used in constipation).
 · Calabar beans gives physostigmine , which is cholinomimetic agent.

SEEDS :
· Seeds of Nux Vomica give strychnine ,which is CNS stimulant.

· Castor oil seeds gives castor oil.

ROOTS:
· Reserpine was used for hypertension treatment.

· Rawoulfia serpentina gives reserpine , a hypotensive agent.

BARK:
· Atropa balladonna gives atropine ,which is anticholinergic.

· Cinchona bark gives quinine and quindine ,which are antimalarial drugs.

STEM:
Chondrodendron tomentosum gives tuboqurarine,which is skeletal muscle
relaxant used in general anesthesia.

ANIMAL SOURCES:
· Pancreas is a source of insulin , used in treatment of Diabetes.

· Sheep thyroid is a source of thyroxin ,used in hypertension .

· Cod liver is used as source of vitamin A and D .

· Anterior pituitary is a source of pituitary gonadotropins used in

treatment of infertility.

· Blood of animal used in preparation of vaccines .
