FUNCTIONS AND PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE OF

ART

A. Find examples of Functions of Art

1. Personal Function

2. Social Function

3. Physical
Function
B. Explain the Philosophical Perspective of Art

1. Art as Imitation
-Art as an imitation. Plato theorize that Art is a copy of a copy of a life and reality. He also
stated in his theory of Mimesis that ideal is the ultimate reality, thus also making art the
imitation of ideals. And I agree to the this theory because observing Art, you'll realize that it is
based on objects, nature, people's every day event or experience. Just like what we see from
flims, read from literary pieces, or in enjoying a painting, when we compare all of them we will
find a similarity. It all depicts something in reality or something that's was once an ideal.
2. Art as Representation
-Art as a representation. But first what is art? We already know what it art but for the sake of
the explanation, I'll define it again. It is a visual object or experience consciously created through
an expression of skill or imagination. Therefore, art depicts or conveys one's feelings, expression
or idea. It does not only limit's its scope to the outward beauty of it but also the deeper
significance of one art.

3. Art as Disinterested Judgement

- Art as a disinterested judgement. On previous philosophical perspective of art, we always

consider personal feelings either the artist itself or the audience. Art is subjective in short. But this
perspective is different, it interpret art as something disinterested. By disinterested, it means not being
influenced by considering personal advantage or being unbiased in simplier terms. Art is referred to be
universal or objective, such that our judgement claims the approval of other people when in fact that
approval is based on personal opinions. We seek objectivity base on personal feelings not the concept of
the Art.

4. Art as a Communication of Emotion

- Art as a communication of emotion. This perspective is widely known, in fact it is one of the
reason why we do art. Art is the channel of an artist's emotion and thoughts. And one artist makes an
art because he/she wants to convey something she is unable to say verbally. It can be either a deep
personal feeling such as depression or motivation, a political opinion, or even a religious belief. Art is a
means of communication of emotions because it can reach from up to one person to thousands.
