PIVOT OR PERSEVERE

The Pivot is where we change our old hypothesis to

create a new one. A pivot is a "structured course
correction designed to test a new fundamental
hypothesis about the product, strategy, and engine
of growth.". The Persevere approach is where we
keep trying to prove our old (existing) hypothesis.
We design new experiments or improve old
experiments and see if those work.
INNOVATION ACCOUNTING LEADS TO FASTERPIVOTS

By contrast, Innovation Accounting uses leading indicators. That enables us to quickly

evaluate the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and make a critical pivot or persevere
decision. We can make faster economic decisions based on objective data. This helps
reduce waste in both development time and money
A STARTUP’S RUNWAY IS THE NUMBER OF PIVOTS IT CAN
STILL MAKE

When startups start to run low on cash, they can extend the runway two ways:
by cutting costs or by raising additional funds
PIVOTS REQUIRE COURAGE

1. Vanity metrics can allow entrepreneurs to

form false conclusions and live in their own
private reality
2. when an entrepreneur has an unclear
hypothesis, it’s almost impossible to
experience complete failure, and without
failure there is usually no impetus to embark
on the radical change a pivot requires.
3. Many entrepreneurs are afraid,
acknowledging failure can lead to
dangerously low morale
THE PIVOT ORPERSEVERE MEETING

During your Pivot or Persevere meeting, review your

original hypothesis and targets compared to the actual
results. Discuss your learnings and decide if you will adjust
(Pivot) or stay the course (Persevere). If you plan to Pivot,
capture the actions that you will take to adjust the
marketing program
FAILURE TO PIVOT

Pivoting in the context of a startup happens when a company decides to change

its business strategy to adapt to changes in its industry. A CB Insights study points
out that not pivoting is one of the 20 reasons startups fail, even leading to death.
We believe that the concept should not only be present in the mind of the
entrepreneur to avoid failing a business, but also to remind us that at no time
should you stop learning or taking advantage of any resource.

A PIVOT IS A STRATEGIC HYPOTHESIS

A pivot means fundamentally changing the direction of a business when you realize
the current products or services aren't meeting the needs of the market. The main
goal of a pivot is to help a company improve revenue or survive in the market, but
the way you pivot your business can make all the difference. That kind of change is
actually an accumulation of adds and exits
