The risk of falling can be a serious complication in the elderly because falls in the elderly
can cause serious injury and disability. The handling that can be applied to reduce the risk of
falling is by balance exercise and square stepping exercise. The purpose of this study was to
analyze the effectiveness of balance exercise and square stepping exercise to reduce the risk of
falling in the elderly in Kaliacar Village, Gading, Probolinggo. This type of research is a quasi-
experimental method with a cross over group design approach. The population was 125 people
with 36 respondents who met the research inclusion requirements, was selected by random
sampling technique. The instrument used the Berg balance scale observation sheet and then the
data was collected through the process of editing, coding, scoring and tabulating. The data
obtained were analyzed using the independent samples T test hypothesis and the paired samples
T test hypothesis for both groups. The results showed that the value of ρV 0.000 in the group
given the square stepping exercise and the value of ρV 0.000 in the group given the balance
exercise. For the comparison test, the sig(2-tailed) value was 0.966 in the first period (before
the cross over) and 0.683 in the second period (after the cross over) in both groups with sig(2-
tailed) > 0.05. So there is no difference between balance exercise and square stepping exercise
toward the reducing risk of falling in the elderly. BE and SSE are a series of movements to
improve muscle strength and balance in elderly. Thus, to apply the two therapies, by providing
only one intervention to each respondent.
