SLOPE OF A LINE

Finding the slope of a line given two points.

Specific Objectives

1. Find the slope of a line given the two endpoints of the segment
2. Verify geometric figures using slope of a line

Material
1. Pencil
2. Ruler

Lesson

1. Slope of a line

Slope of a straight line is equal to the tangent of its angle of inclination.

1
Worked Example 1
Find the slope of a line given the endpoints of the line segment (-3,4) and
(-2,-6)

Solution:

𝑦2 − 𝑦1 −6 − 4 −10
𝑚= = = = −10
𝑥2 − 𝑥1 −2 + 3 1

The slope is m = -10

Worked Example 2

Show that points A(1,2), B(3,5) and C(-3,9) are the vertices of a right
triangle.

5−2 3 9−5 2 9−2 7

𝑚𝐴𝐵 = = ; 𝑚𝐵𝐶 = = − ; 𝑚𝐴𝐶 = = −
3−1 2 −3 − 3 3 −3 − 1 4

Since the slopes of the two sides AB and BC are negative reciprocal then
these two sides of the triangle are perpendicular. Then the given points are
vertices of a right triangle.
