Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario
The main objective of the second assignment is to offer students an opportunity to practice change
management concepts through identifying a change, analyzing the barriers to change and the leadership
in leading changes, and finding solutions to improve change implementation.

As a group of maximum five students, you need to choose a local medium size company/organization in
your local city where you can visit. Through visiting the chosen company, interviewing its managers and

involved stakeholders, your group is expected to identify and investigate a problem that needs to be
changed and propose a change leading plan to the chosen company.

The proposed plan must cover at least the following components: the needs for change, analysing the
root causes, identifying key stakeholders involved in the identified problem, and explaining barriers to
change, proposing steps for leading the change, proposing appropriate leadership approaches to leading
the change successfully.

Force-field analysis, stakeholder analysis or other analysis tools may be used to identify barriers to
change. In addition, it is important to apply a variety of change management theories and models
(Kotter’s 8-step model, Lewin’s change management model, Nadler’s congruence model of change), and
different leadership approaches dealing with the change identified in the plan.

This plan is to be presented to the lecturer as a representative of the company’s board of management
(*) in the form of a Group PowerPoint presentation and slides with notes. The structure of the plan is
suggested as follows:
(1) Introduction to the change leading plan
(2) Change identified and the needs for change
(3) Application of analysis tools to identify opposition against and support for change
(4) An evaluation of how barriers to change may influence leadership decision making.
(5) Steps for leading the change based on change management concepts and models
(6) Proposed leadership approaches to leading the change successfully
(*) If your group could invite the real manager(s) of the chosen company to join your presentation, you
will get mark bonus.
