STANDARDS & ASSESSMENT
NJ New Jersey Student Learning Standard for Science (2016)
Grade: FOURTH GRADE
Standard: 4LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
Standards Indicator: 4LS11. Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.
[Clarification Statement: Examples of structures could include thorns, stems, roots, colored petals, heart, stomach, lung, brain, and skin.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is
limited to macroscopic structures within plant and animal systems.]
Learning
Objective(s) Students will investigate specific species of animals that are endangered species to develop an understanding on why animals become endagered and
(Learning extinct.
Target(s))
Knowledge of
For this lesson, students will be assigned to groups of 45. Each group will be varied and selected by the teacher to include different types and level of

learners. Students will be working together where each group will be responsible for giving each student a specific 'job' in their group to ensure that
Design for
each student is activity participating.
Learning
Students will be creating posters in their individual groups to show their endangered animal. The poster will include the animals name, where the
animal lives, what the animal eats, why the animal is endangered, what we as humans can do to help this animal out of endangerment, and a fun fact
Assessment
about the animal. Students will be using their Chrome Books to investigate their specific animal using the internet to research. Students will be graded
Plan
on their poster and the information and accuracy of what is included as well as their presentation once the poster is complete. Each group will present
their poster to the class to teach their classmates about their endangered animal.
IMPLEMENTATION
This lesson requires students to work in small groups to research and investigate their endangered animal they were assigned. This lesson gives
students the chance to not only work with their classmates but also with students in the class that students may have not worked with before. The
Lesson
teacher will strategically pick groups to vary each group on types and level of students. The groups will vary so each students will be able to do a job
Rationale
in their group that best fits the way they learn best. Jobs include, researcher, scribe, group leader, and student to check the work throughout for
accuracy.

Markers
A. Anticipatory Set
Teacher will begin by asking students what they know about endangered and extinct species
The teacher will ask students what they know about both endangered and extinct species before explaining the difference between them
B. Specifying the Goal
The teacher will begin explaining to the class that they will be working in a group to create a poster project where each group will be given a
specific endangered animal where they must research their animal to learn more about not only their specific animal but also on endangered and
extinct species.
Students will be told that poster will include the animals name, where the animal lives, what the animal eats, why the animal is endangered, what
we as humans can do to help this animal out of endangerment, and a fun fact about the animal
C. Structuring the Task
The teacher will give students their groups they will be working with, the groups will range from different types and level of learners to allow for
fair groups where each student will be working with their classmates
Procedure
The teacher will explain that each student in each group will be given a job to in their group to ensure that each student is participating and
taking part in the project
D. Teaching and Evaluating the Collaborative Process
Throughout the lesson the teacher will be ensuring that students are being kind and respectful. Each student will be required to take part in the
creation of their project
E. Monitoring Group Performance
The teacher will ensure that each student is staying on task throughout the lesson by walking around to each group to check their work,
progress, and making sure each student was given a specific task in their group
F. Debriefing
Once students have completed their project, each group will be required to present their poster project to the class to show their research and
findings.
